CHAPTER TEN
Solemn Darkness
W alking through downtown towards the carnival, Morgan couldnât help but dwell on what she experienced with Shaundra. She felt as if she had been sleepwalking but was paralyzed and fully conscious simultaneously, while Shaundraâs essence entered Morganâs, rendering her speechless. At first, Morgan doubted what Shaundra told her, but after witnessing the power she felt within, she couldnât deny that Shaundra possessed an ability that allowed her to see into the past and perhaps also the future. If this instance had taken place in Kingston, Morgan wouldnât have trusted it for a second. Everyone knew her story there, but no one in Whispering Pines other than Chelsea knew about Jax, not even Victor.
The carnival was precisely what Chelsea expected. Children and teenagers ran around hysterically from one ride to the next as the smell of funnel cakes swirled in the air. The flashing lights and childish music instantly made Morgan forget about Shaundra. She started reliving all the great times she had as a child. She had taken Chelsea for granted the last couple of months, but Victor made her feel happier than sheâd ever been. This evening, however, she was glad to only have Chelsea by her side. After riding the bumper cars, they took pictures with their heads sticking out of cardboard cutouts and appeared to be a clown and a strong man.
After walking through the funhouse, which ended with a mirror maze, they decided to take a break and ride the Ferris wheel. The rickety structure towered over the girls, and more than half of the lightbulbs were burnt out. It was the oldest looking ride in the carnival, but unnerving as it was, they climbed into the passenger car and sat on torn blue vinyl seats. The gate that held them in seemed as if it would swing open without warning. Morgan always felt the same about carnival rides. They were designed to instill as much fear as they did excitement, without knowing when one would break, collapse, or how many years and places the carnival had traveled to.
As Morgan and Chelsea reached the top of the Ferris wheel, they admired the sunsetâs burning red splendor over Whispering Pines and the carnival lights burning brighter. Staring down a hundred feet below, they watched couples promenading around the festival grounds holding hands. It was quiet at the top, and Chelsea began to confess her genuine emotions.
âIâm sorry Iâve been so upset lately,â Chelsea said.
âNo, donât apologize. This is all my fault, and Iâm sorry Iâve been distant. Everything changed when I met Victor. That first week was tough, and it felt like everything was going to hell before it even started. Remember when we were kids and promised we would always be there for each other? I didnât think anything could tear our friendship apart, and I still feel the same way, but Victor is a big part of my life now too, Chelsea. Trust me, he could never replace you. He and I will never have what you and I do.
