West studied a large map of the town centre, where the crime scenes had been marked out. He added a pin where Michael’s house was, and another where James Booker’s flat was. Taking a step back he confirmed at once that one of the scenes, the house where the couple had died, was only a few short streets away from where Michael lived, and that James’ flat was also within a mile of both locations. In fact, West reached out and traced a circle on the map’s surface, all the scenes were probably less than a mile away from Michael’s house.

‘OK, sir, there are absolutely threads connecting aspects of these cases to Manners. And there are definitely patterns between some of the cases as well.’

West turned surprised, having not heard Johnson and Jansen enter the room. Greg was speaking rapidly, excited to have some solid updates for his DI.

‘Go on then Greg, but you needn’t look so happy about it. I happen to like Michael, and I’d be inclined to believe he was innocent, just unfortunate. But as I say, go on.’

‘Sorry sir, you’re right, I don’t dislike him, but I’m happy about progress, not who it points to.’ Johnson blushed, glancing round at Nicola as he continued. ‘So, the first case in the spree, for want of a better word. Carl Phillips, found dead in his car, we’ve each got something to report there.’ He jerked his head to indicate their colleague. ‘Number one, we knew he had connections to organised crime and, as you know, it turned out he was in fact a known associate of Angelo Oliora – AKA Angel - who was working with Manners’ brother, Benjamin MacNair.’ Johnson paused, glancing at West, who nodded for him to continue.

‘Now, we don’t know whether Phillips actually crossed paths with Mr MacNair, but there’s certainly a connection and, from what I can gather, he was acting as a drop-off driver obtaining drugs for Angel’s crew. And we know how Ben liked to use drugs….’

West nodded again, recalling this was the dubious connection Jimmy Fisher had made, but that had seemingly led nowhere. The detective turned to Nicola, who cleared her throat as she laid down her tablet and started swiping through images. ‘So, from the post mortem we confirmed that Mr Phillips died from chemical asphyxiation, caused by inhaling exhaust fumes. Hence the original diagnosis of suicide.’

‘However,’ West interrupted, ‘the garage door and the door into the house were both locked from the outside, which obviously doesn’t add up.’ He ran his hand over his shaved scalp as he remembered the details.

‘Correct, and,’ Nicola tapped a long finger against the tablet screen. ‘The post mortem also found a high concentration of a cocktail of chemicals in the deceased’s blood stream. And these had a signature that we can match with 99% accuracy to the chemicals found within Michael Manners’ blood back in the summer when, it is alleged, he had been drugged by his brother’s associates.
