Chapter Sixteen

When they got back downstairs, a glance at her watch told Isa that it was about half-past three. The sky was slightly hazy, but rain seemed unlikely, so when Ming suggested they go to her favorite used-clothing store, Isa took her up on the offer. It wound up having a really great selection, and she and Ming had a great time trying to each find the most hideous thing in the store. Ming ended up buying a pair of black ballet flats, and Isa discovered an awesome pair of Jackie O-style sunglasses and a black trench coat in perfect condition.

Then they went down the street a little and came across a grocery store Ming really liked. Penny’s Market had an amazing variety of fruit and vegetables, as well as a huge section of things Isa hadn’t even known existed before then, such as a dahlia-like yellow-orange fruit that was apparently called Buddha’s Hand.

Isa bought a jar of mixed Spanish olives, and then, when Ming pointed out that it was almost dinnertime, Isa agreed to join her over at her place for a meal. Ming selected a number of fresh ingredients for a salad and got a jar of pesto, some whole-wheat pasta, and sun-dried tomatoes preserved in olive oil.

They put the groceries into Ming’s car and headed off—her home was about a fifteen-minute drive from the grocery store. She lived in a slightly suburb-like area, but the houses weren’t all the same, all of them various sizes and colors. Ming’s was forest green and rather small, but sweet looking, Isa thought, with white trim around the roof. It also had, as well as a lovely, healthy-looking lawn, a lawn gnome and a few plastic flamingos out front. “What can I say, I like kitsch,” Ming told Isa as she watched her take them in.

“Me too,” Isa told her, although that was only somewhat true.

“Do they have names?” she asked Ming as she unlocked the front door. If they did, maybe the names would be interesting ones…and Isa was guessing that maybe the type of person to have lawn gnomes and flamingos on their front lawn would also be the type who might name them.

“The gnome is Alfred, and the flamingos are Tick and Tock. The three of them don’t get along very well, and I have to reprimand them from time to time. Especially Alfred. He’s a real bastard.”

“Great names,” Isa said with a laugh. The great names—and the “life” Ming had given to her lawn decorations—were two more things to perhaps add to her interest in Ming.

After putting the bags on the black-and-white-checkered counter, Ming got some water boiling, then went over to a stereo in the corner of her entirely black-and-white kitchen (even the appliances were either black or white), and put on some music. Ella Fitzgerald starting singing in her rich, deep voice, and Isa told her, “I like Ella a lot. She’s perfect music to cook to.”

“To kiss to, as well,” Ming said, and she
