Chapter Nineteen

Amanda lunged at the repulsive Crow, nails bared like a she-lion, screaming. “I will scratch your eye out, Mahpiyahota! Then you will forever be blind in the Great Land beyond.”

Gray Cloud seized her wrists, pulling her close. His fetid breath reminded, her of rotting meat, as he bellowed in her face. “I should have killed you that day, along with your brother and his friend.”

Amanda’s mind reeled as lucid flashes of the handsome young man with blue eyes entered her thoughts. She saw herself, as if in a dream, on a horse as the same man pleaded with her. Suddenly, she saw herself gallop past a large white house. She watched herself ride through a tall archway, standing at the end of a long lane. In the middle of the arch hung a black metal circle with a large letter ‘T’ in its center.

Gray Cloud leered at her while she sat staring vacantly into space. “Did you hear me?” He yelled, twisting her arm.

Amanda’s memory flashed back to her in erratic succession. “You can go where Iktomi resides, Mahpiyahotea!” She boldly screamed, baring her teeth at the repugnant Crow.

Gray Cloud backhanded her across the mouth. Gingerly, she touched her swollen lip, tasting the metallic tang of blood, then she glanced at her bloody fingertips and sneered. “Go eat unkce!”

“Tawin!” Gray Cloud snarled as he grabbed her hair, glaring into her defiant green eyes. “You have caused me much trouble.” He bent her backwards. “Why did you not die with the others?”

Amanda’s dark memories began to pour forth. In her mind’s eye she envisioned the last moments of that day on the prairie. Otto lay on the ground in a pool of blood surrounding his head with an arrow protruding from his neck. Her hand flew to her throat, imagining the agony he must have felt during those last moments of his life. She then viewed Michael’s still body on the ground some ten yards from Otto’s. Tears filled her eyes as everything began falling into place. She turned to Luke with an expression of pure love as she remembered her repetitive dream. She recalled his handsome face, hovering over her with anguish, she sighed as she felt lightheaded.

Gray Cloud traced the side of her face with the back of his knife, then nodded his head in Luke’s direction. “Do not worry about Wahinzin.” He sneered. “I will not kill him; not yet anyway.” He ogled Amanda’s nudity, then said to Red Hawk. “Throw some water on our friend. He must not miss the fun we shall have with his tawin.” Red Hawk ran to the lake, scooped water into his cupped hands, then carefully ran back to the bound warrior and threw the water into Luke’s face. As Luke shook his head, his vision blurred. Gray Cloud shoved Amanda at Red Hawk. “Hold her. Do not let her get away.” The malicious Crow strutted over to Luke, then squatted on his haunches and asked with a smirk. “Are you awake, Wahinzin? We are about to begin the games.
