CHAPTER TWELVE

“Another murder?”

Janine nodded. “That was Stiles. It happened in a Denver suburb but they’d seen the notices on that NCIC thing and called him.”

“Are they sure it’s our guy?”

She shuddered at the way he said, ‘our guy.’ She didn’t want him to be their anything. What she wanted was him out of her head, out of her life, and behind bars. “Stiles believes it is, but that’s why I asked him to have them send photos. I know it’s not like being at the scene, but we can probably tell.”

“Good idea. There’s only one problem.”

“What’s that?” she asked walking to the hallway for her keys and purse on the way out the door.

“Your probable reaction when you see the pictures.”

Janine paused on the front porch, but only for a minute. “Maybe it will be like the one yesterday, not our guy.”

“I doubt it. Stiles recognizes his subtleties, now. He won’t make the same mistake twice. That and the fact that you dreamed last night, I think we can be pretty sure it is who we think.”

Janine hadn’t really needed that reminder. Her nerves already zinged with expectant electricity. Knowing it wouldn’t be wise for her to be behind the wheel right now she tossed her keys to him and climbed in the passenger side. While she waited for Connor to walk around and get in, she tried to come up with a way to control the reemergence of the dream.

Her mind wandered back to their discussion about Connor’s blackouts. He said he usually had warning signs they were coming on. Janine closed her eyes and tried to think of how she felt moments before viewing previous crime scenes. She concentrated on when she went up the stairs to Charlene’s apartment. At the entrance she had felt a strange almost suffocating warmth come over her. Once inside her heart rate had increased significantly and beads of sweat had popped up on her forehead. She remembered an odd lightness, almost like she was floating when she started up the steps.

Opening her eyes, she turned in her seat to face Connor. “Okay, tell me what you do when you feel the blackouts coming on.”

“It would probably be better if we didn’t focus on that right now.”

“I’m not, honest. I want to know what you do so I can figure out how to have some control over my reaction in Stiles’ office.”

He glanced over at her. “You could wait in the car and I could fill you in later, where it’s safe from prying eyes.”

“Try again. I have to be there, you know it.” She watched him while he debated himself on the merits of telling her. His hand plowed through his hair then rubbed the back of his neck. It couldn’t be clearer how much he didn’t want to talk about it.

“If I recognize it before the darkness starts crowding out my vision it’s usually a case of mind-over-matter. I consciously try to relax my muscles one by one. The concentration keeps my mind too busy to shut down.
