“Fine day!” the letter carrier called out to Willa as he walked up to her house. Willa sat on the front steps waiting for Marina to come by for the walk to school. Willa was about to bring the mail inside when she noticed her name on an envelope. A letter for her! But no — the letter was the same one which she had mailed the other day. There was a stamped message on the letter:

RETURN TO SENDER

_√_ insufficient postage

_√_ address incomplete

___ no such person at above address

___ damaged letter

___ other

Willa stared at it. Her letter had been returned! She threw all the other letters inside the door.

Moments later, Marina found her crouched down on the bottom step.

“Sorry I’m late,” Marina called out. “Amanda threw up all over me and I had to change my clothes. Willa, what’s the matter?”

“My letter was returned.” Willa stared sadly at the envelope.

Marina bent down to look. “I guess they didn’t know what to do with it. There’s no street name or number. There isn’t even a postal code.”

“I thought they would know where he lived if he was king!”

“No,” Marina told her. “Not without a postal code. It probably didn’t even get past the post office. They just won’t send letters anymore without that code.”

“I’ll never meet my father,” Willa mourned. “He probably isn’t the king of Heyty. He’s probably dead.”

“Oh, he’s not dead,” Marina reassured her. “And even if he’s not king, he could still be very rich! Look, we’ll still find him. We just have to find his proper address.”

“But it’s not in my mother’s address book.”

“Well, his address has to be somewhere,” said Marina. “We’ll just have to find it.”
