Chapter Nine

Clay’s gaze dropped to the phone lying in the street, then he shifted his stance and cast about for a weapon. He lurched for the truck parked behind the jeep, hoping there were actual tools in the toolbox, but he didn’t get more than two steps before one of the strigoi veered in front of him.

Instinctively, Clay stepped across the curtain, then materialized beside the truck’s built-in toolbox. He didn’t get to do more than reach for it before something crashed into his back, sending him toward the ground. Clay jumped into the otherworld before he hit, then twisted back again, rejoining a chaotic world in the center of the street as a car screeched up against the curb.

A series of resounding shots rang out nearby, followed by a shattering of glass. Clay spun, searching for Danica, but three different cars blocked the road, more deadlocked around the pub’s parking lot entrance, honking pointlessly. Clay pushed past a couple of yelling men in time to watch one of the strigoi lift a little four-door car and shove it onto its side.

“Oh, that’s just—”

He broke off when he saw Danica sprinting toward the pub. She leapt the gate on the patio and weaved between the tables. Another strigoi appeared on her heels a second later. It ripped the decorative wrought iron gate straight out of the ground and shoved one of the tables so that it smashed into the pub wall right above Danica’s head. She ducked and slipped through the entrance without glancing back.

Clay rushed after the strigoi, bending to pick up a piece of the broken gate as he entered the patio. When the strigoi reached the door, Clay yanked energy from his curtain and threw the born-again sideways, skidding it through the tables before slamming it against a part of the gate still entrenched in the ground. Curved black spikes broke through its stomach, though precious little blood came with them. Before it could pull itself free, Clay slammed the jagged end of the iron bar through the left side of the strigoi’s chest.

The born-again snarled scornfully and grabbed Clay’s arm in a punishing grip. It yanked, its other arm lifting to wrap around Clay’s neck, forcing him down into an ugly embrace, the tips of the gate grazing his chest.

Clay gave a shout and threw himself into the otherworld, the curtain’s edges pulsing in stress. He immediately returned, placing himself just beyond the strigoi’s reach. Then he grabbed the bar embedded in the creature’s chest and ripped it free. He stabbed it again, this time quickly jerking it out and dodging its reaching hands. The strigoi merely gripped the gate and started pushing itself up, the spikes disappearing into its stomach as it rose.

“Just die,” snapped Clay as he stabbed it again. Over and over, the sound of rending flesh filling his ears louder than the shrieks surrounding him. He even wrenched the bar and twisted it, making sure he’d torn apart the thing’s heart. The strigoi just laughed, its red eyes full of dark humor.
