Margaret \^Makes him a curtsey, smiles breaking through her tears, and speaks in her old saucy manner^. General Sir Henry Milman, commanding the district, you have had your say, and now I mean to have mine ... I don^t admit the truth of one syllable you have been saying, but we won't quarrel about it, we'll make a compact; to please me you will dress yourself for this afternoon exactly as you did for our wedding, and you will receive the natives for this once; after that, we shall see who's right and who's wrong, only you must not be obstinate or refuse to be convinced. I say that we are a per-fectly well assorted couple . . . you pretend that I'm a baby and that you're an antiquated edition of Methuselah, which, by-the-bye, is ex* ceedingly rude to me as well as to the object of my choice, for I beg you to remember that I could have married lots of people, and you ought to respect my taste. There now, go and dress ; I give you just half an hour [pushes him towards the door"].
Sir H. Very well, you little tyrant, one can bear anything for once, but I've my condition to make also. I must know the reason for this ridiculous pantomime.
Margaret. You shall know it after you're dressed, if you promise to do all I tell you.
Sir H. Before I go, however, I will just ask you to come with me [leads her to a long mirror'], I never care to see myself in a looking-glass . . .
Margaret [interrupts him vehemently]. No; I wish you did—
Sir H. [he continues]. But for this once ! Now stand by my side, Margaret, and tell me if we are a suitable couple, in outward aspect at any rate.
Margaret. Oh ! if you want to get rid of me, say so at once, I won't stand in your way, though 1 don't suppose the law would separate us because you choose to wear old clothes and to stoop. Now do go ; the people will be coming. [Exit Sir Henry.]

Margaret. Thank goodness it*s nearly over; I am tired of worrying him. How kind and good he was, and so patient—for he must think it's only a fad of mine. As for the absurd nonsense he talks about himself, I can't make it out. Perhaps he thinks I want to turn into a frisky matron, and so he reminds me that I must be staid as becomes the wife of a would-be Methuselah [jlaughs]. No, bless him. he knows better than that; besides, he's too guileless to suspect; it's nothing but laziness—an excuse to wear his old clothes. Of one thing Tm certain—he would be furious if anybody took him at his word and treated him as he pretends to treat himself, and this article will make him frantic, but I think it may cure him of his mania, only, poor dear, I hope it won't hurt
