Sigurd, still not entirely sure what to make of the dwarf, agreed. But he vowed to himself that he would remain cautious and alert. He sliced the heart out of the dragon’s corpse and began to cook it over a hot fire. When he turned the heart to char it evenly, he burned his fingers on some of the juice, as the dragon’s blood came sizzling out. Without thinking, he licked his fingers and was astounded at the magical effect of the blood: He could understand the language of the birds as they chattered in the trees around him.

The birds gave the prince counsel, informing him that if he ate the heart himself he would gain immortal wisdom. Upon consuming the gruesome repast, Sigurd perceived that Regin intended to kill him, so that the dwarf could keep the treasure for himself. Thus forewarned, Sigurd turned the tables on the villainous Regin, slaying him and claiming the treasure. This, of course, would lead to an assortment of further adventures, all because the hero with a great sword slew the dragon Fafnir.
