CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“ARIANNA,” JOHN SAID, poking his head inside her office. “I hate to bother you, but…”

“But what?” Arianna lifted her head, arching her back in a stretch.

“Casey told me to come get you. There’s some dude in the store who won’t go away until he talks to you.” John stepped up to her side and studied the pencil sketch taped to the desk.

“What dude?” Arianna glanced at John.

“Garret or Jared. Something like that.” John turned to inspect the framed wall art.

Arianna tried to swallow, but her mouth had gone dry. She wiped her palms on her skirt. “Did he mention going to school with me?”

John spun around with a grin. “Yes. So, who is this guy? Casey guessed he’s an ex-boyfriend.”

Arianna shook her head, causing her loose bun to fall out. “Nope. Nothing like that.”

John thrust his hands into his front pockets. “Weird.”

Arianna inhaled deeply and stymied a shiver. “We graduated together, but we weren’t even friends.”

John rolled back on his heels. “He’s not the most honest fellow.”

“As I recall, he was always a shyster. I bet he didn’t explicitly say we dated but implied it.” Arianna crossed her arms.

“Exactly.” John nodded.

“Tell Casey I’ll be there in a few. Also, warn her.” After John left, Arianna sat in silence. She hadn’t thought of Jared since she’d graduated high school years ago. Jared had been the proverbial popular, handsome jock with the cheerleader girlfriend-of-the-week on his arm. He’d never paid any positive attention to nerds or shy people like her.

“My love?” Kyan leaned over the edge of the pot. “Why does this person trouble you?” Kyan canted his head.

“In school, Jared didn’t care who he hurt with his comments or actions. It was all about making him look good. He had to get the laughs by bullying others.” She frowned, thinking back to one event in particular. Lunch period had never been the same afterward.

“Why is he here now?” She asked the universe then sighed. “I better go see what he wants.”

“I’ll come with you.” Kyan lifted out of the plant and flitted to her hand.

“I appreciate the support.” Her heart lightened as she left the office.

A rush of cool air fluttered Kyan’s wings as she pushed the door to the store. John rung up a customer at the cash register, and Casey had an embroidery catalog open at the counter. She flipped to a page, and the woman client smiled and nodded.

Arianna’s scalp tingled as Kyan settled in her hair.

Arianna spotted Jared near the front. He examined the rack of shirts holding her most recent design. Jared’s forehead had expanded and his athletic physique had morphed as if all the muscles gathered around his middle.

He glanced up and met her eyes. A huge smile flashed, exposing his signature dimples. The lack of anxiety at seeing him surprised Arianna. She’d expected to be intimidated, but she was only annoyed and, maybe, a smidge curious.

“Arianna, it’s good to see you again.” Jared reached for her small hands, covering them in his meaty damp ones.
