Chapter 5: Flying from the Past

I passed Scarlet a cup of coffee. I had ordered one of those large tubs, the ones you were supposed to order for company or family gatherings. So we had an entire gallon of coffee all to ourselves.

Scarlet looked like she needed it. She had dumped her suitcase and thrown off her coat before collapsing onto my bed. It took a good few minutes before she pulled herself up. She looked completely defeated. She had barely slept since last night, and had been flying for hours on end, beating herself up emotionally the whole time. I didn’t even know how she was awake, let alone capable of carrying a conversation.

“Scarlet, I love you, but you look like a piece of shit.”

“I know.”

She took a sip of her coffee, then shook her head, trying to shake off the exhaustion. I had spent a good half an hour letting her cry into my shirt, but now that she was here, I didn’t know what to do. Or rather, I’d have to improvise the next part. There would be no guides for this, only my heartfelt concern for my girlfriend.

“Look, if you want to go clean up, go clean up. If you need to nap, take a nap. All I’m saying is I’m not letting you fly looking like that. You also don’t have to talk about it now, but I want to be there for you when you feel up for telling me about Elinor,” I said, only for her to sigh. She glanced at the cup in her hands, collecting her thoughts.

“Let’s just get it over with. I’m in no condition to fly anyways.”

I winced as she gulped down her coffee. She didn’t even put milk or sugar in it before emptying the entire cup in record time. Then she threw it at the dustbin, missing spectacularly. If she wasn’t a wreck right now, I’d have told her to pick up her damn trash.

“Elinor was the first love I had real, strong feelings for. She was the one that made me realize that it wasn’t because I didn’t like humans or relationships, but rather that I loved girls. She was so innocuous, but once you got to knew her, she had this burning passion about everything she did. I was one of her passions, and I loved every moment of it.” I watched her tired eyes sparkle again as her face lit up.

“We faced our share of challenges. I had to come out to my own parents which could’ve gone better. She came out to her parents, and they kicked her out of the house.” Scarlet sighed, shaking her head.

“I thought that, since I was a dragon, it was my responsibility to take care of her. I found a nice barn in the countryside, on the edge of a small town. She changed her name. I bought us a nest we could be happy together. She got a simple job as a cashier, and it was all very sweet.
