Chapter Six

He calmed down. He had no other choice. They hadn't beaten him yet, they hadn't touched him yet. They were saving him, the sick sons of bitches, and they were too busy to enjoy themselves at the moment. He could only hope that Phirun, Emma and the others were still fighting, and that was the reason for the delay.

As best he could with his field of vision, he examined the device they had stuck him in. If the intention was medieval, the design and the construction were not. Even in this poor quality of light, he could see that the dark-stained wood was new. And instead of the hinged boards being secured by a lock, they were shut by a peculiar elaborate mechanism with moveable parts that went all the way down close to his knee.

The locking mechanism. It was a challenge in geometric thinking, and using his toes to work a grip, Dale slowly, patiently, tried to pull up a thick pin that seemed to be the key to the apparatus. It seemed to take ages, prompting him to sweat in nervous torrents even more. When the pin was finally free, he had to apply foot pressure to what looked deceptively like a lever but was in fact a pedal. Damn it, come on. Come on! He was almost there, if he didn't give up. But then he heard the crank of the metallic door—

He'd lost.

No.

"Dale! Oh, my God!" It was Vivian, rushing in and over to him.

"Jesus Christ, what the hell is this? And what are you doing here?"

"Please just get me out of here," he said tiredly.

She fumbled with the mechanism, thrown by the complexity of the wooden pins and the levers, and after he muttered impatiently for her to stamp on the pedal, they both heard the chunk of a release. Vivian flung up the top hinge board, and he found he didn't have the strength to lift himself out. Gently, she took him by the waist and extricated him, and he couldn't help himself—he burst into tears.

"Get me out of this room get me out of this room please..."

She did. Once inside in the dark tunnel, his back fell against a slimy stone wall, and he didn't care about the cold or the damp or the dark; it was just so good to be alive and away from that infernal device. "I'm sorry," he muttered, rubbing the heels of his palms into his eyes. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay—"

"I'm—I'm sorry—"

"You're out of it now, you're clear—"

His body shuddered with the aftermath of his capture, his chest heaving, and as she put her arm around him to comfort him, again his physical responses acted on their own, and he became insistently, powerfully hard. In the dim light of the tunnel, he flushed scarlet with shame, but he couldn't will the erection away.

"Oh, shit, I don't—"

"It's trauma," said Vivian. "I know it's just a body thing.

It's adrenaline and nerves, your body telling you you're alive."
