Chapter 6

Leaning against the bar, Liam took a long sip of whiskey, the burn a welcome distraction. How else was he supposed to concentrate with Calla walking around looking like that? She’d worn a little black dress to the rehearsal dinner, most likely to ensure all the attention was on the bride-to-be. While Poppy was glowing in a cherry red cocktail dress, Liam only had eyes for Calla. The lacey, onyx fabric accentuated her natural beauty. Paired with sexy heels that made her long legs go on forever, she was pure temptation.

The object of his fantasies turned in his direction, a tumble of auburn curls skimming over her shoulders. He gripped his whiskey glass, his fingers itching to bury themselves in her hair. Those emerald eyes found him, and she stiffened, the pulse in her neck fluttering wildly.

Yea, his little nymph had seen the need stamped all over his face.

She slipped through the crowd and sidled up beside him. “You’re going to set off the smoke detectors.”

Liam rubbed his nose, scenting the whisps of smoke his dragon had loosed. “It seems that both of us are having a hard time controlling our powers around each other.”

“Yes, but if I lose control, I’ll just accidentally make a floral centerpiece spontaneously grow, which could be blamed on any of the women in my family. You’re liable to burn the place down.”

He chuckled. “Then maybe I shouldn’t stand so close to the bar.”

“Good point.” Calla tugged on his arm, guiding him to the other side of the room.

After practicing for the ceremony in the wedding greenhouse earlier, everyone had moved over to the Chalet for dinner and drinks. Liam just wasn’t looking forward to sharing his hotel room with the groom-to-be. As was tradition, Oliver and Poppy would part ways that night and not see each other again until the wedding.

He’d much rather share his room with Calla.

She fiddled with her dress. “So… is your best man speech all set?”

He wrinkled his nose. “Kind of. It sounded good in my head as I wrote it down, but then when I read it out loud, I hated it. But I couldn’t think of anything better. You?”

“Same.”

The wheels turned in Liam’s head. “Would you be my practice audience?”

Calla grinned. “Okay, but I’m not sure this noisy room is the best place for that.”

“I have an idea.” Clasping her hand, he led her out of the restaurant dining area and down the hall. They headed down another hallway, and he pulled his hotel key from his pocket. He opened the door and flipped on a light.

She bit her lip, seeming unsure for a second, but then followed him inside. Her eyes landed on Oliver’s suitcase on the second queen-sized bed. “I forgot that you’re bunking with the groom tonight. Be warned, Poppy says he snores after a few drinks.”

“I remember that from when we shared an apartment.”

Calla grinned. “At least he’ll look well-rested for the pictures tomorrow.”

Going to the closet, he pulled an index card from the pocket of his tuxedo jacket.
