Swiss Cheese on Legs

“Hey, friendlies!”

From behind my phone screen, Chrissy greets her camera with a breathy earnestness, walking off a run in her athleisure wear. The queens are dressed nearly the same as they work on their opening number in the sunshine streaming through the windows of the town hall.

“What if we all enter together?” Bailey suggests.

“I think that’s a maybe,” Alan considers.

It’s August 22, and the Extravaganza is only six days away. But right now, the most important thing to me is hate-watching Chrissy McPhee’s latest Poster video.

“I’m just here to say that even though there’s all this stuff going around online right now, it’s so important that we all show our support for the Drag Extravaganza.”

Whatever this version of Chrissy is, it’s not one I’ve ever met. Her social media face is all tender-hearted profundity and solemn allyship. I loathe this Chrissy even more than the real one who once asked, in the middle of tenth-grade science while I was riding out a particularly bad acne flare, if I was confused when that rover landed on Mars instead of my face.

“I’m here to say that I stand with my LGBTQ+ friends, who need me more than ever. My best friend in the whole world is Brison Dallas, and he is one of the most beloved LGBTQ+ members of our high school community.”

“Maybe it just needs to be a solo,” Alan observes tightly from onstage.

“This is an issue of acceptance and love,” Chrissy continues, her face contracting into a display of devout sincerity. “And we need to show the LGBTQ+ members of our community that we love them.”

I scream inwardly at the thought of how pleased she must be with herself. At the moral high horse she is peering down from. Chrissy blows a kiss at the screen and I flinch away from her virtual affection, as if some of it might get in my hair. Then I do the worst thing you can do on the internet. I read the comments.
