Chapter 21

Several weeks have passed since Kirstin Hebert had spoken with her brother Bill about the possibility of talking to a medical malpractice attorney. Kirstin has been tossing and turning, worrying about her financial situation. The more she thinks about it, the more depressed she becomes. The depression isn’t helping matters.

Kirstin has finally made up her mind, “Bill, it’s me. I’ve decided to take your advice. Did you ever get the name of a medical malpractice attorney?”

Kirstin knows this may be her only hope. The bills are mounting up and there is no income coming in. The hospital bills are more than she expected.

“I did get the name of a top notch attorney from my boss. He said that you should call Gregory Chaisson. From what I understand, there is no charge unless he wins. He will probably be able to tell you immediately if you have a case or not.”

“Thank you Bill. Will you be able to come with me?”

“Just let me know when you have a meeting with him and I will be there. I don’t see a problem with me getting a little time off.”

“I don’t know what I would do without you and mom right now. You’ve been my lifesavers.”

“That’s what family is for Sis.”

Attorney Gregory Chaisson is able to meet with Kirstin the next day. Mr. Chaisson is in his early forty’s, with a full head of dark brown hair that is starting to show some gray. He has an air of competence about him that helps put Kirstin at ease. Kirstin was afraid he will be a stuffy old attorney, but he is anything but. He leads her and Bill into a large office. One wall is lined floor to ceiling with bookshelves overflowing with books. A large window overlooks the riverside. The office smells of wealth. Kirstin sure hopes Bill is correct and he doesn’t charge unless he wins. There is no way she can afford him otherwise.

Chaisson listens carefully to what Kirstin has to tell him. She is surprised at his knowledge of the medical terminology. She is actually grateful someone understands it. It went right over her head when the doctor was explaining it to her.

“Mrs. Hebert, how much did your husband bring home a year?”

“Without overtime, it was $36,000, roughly. But he had been putting in extra hours and his paychecks were almost doubled. That night was the first night he didn’t work late, and he had stopped off at the bar to have a beer with his buddies.”

“Do you know if the bartender tried to stop him from driving, or cut him off after he had a few?”

“No, I don’t. I never talked to anyone from there after the accident. I believe they sent flowers to the funeral home.”

“We might have a case against them also. We can hold them liable for serving him after he was over his limit and then letting him drive drunk.”

“I don’t know about that. Dale was an adult and it was his decision and his decision alone.
