Lenny and I were surrounded in bumper-to-bumper traffic on our way to MIA to take our charter flight to Cayman⦠and James had a problem! Something like that could be the kind of pothole in an op that broke the axle and pushed the car into a ditch on the side of the road. Not today, I thought. People were depending on me.
âWhat kind of problem?â I asked James in the most composed and calm voice I could muster.
âThe phones. I canât control all of them the way you want. Mostly the Verizon cell phones for this guy Santo. Itâs Verizon, man. I told you, their security is the best.â He paused.
He was one of the best hackers in the world with one of the most powerful computing operations in the world. If he couldnât figure a way around this, no one could.
âWhat do you think you can do with that guy? Heâs the critical link in this whole thing today.â
âI can do one of them. They wonât notice me if I just do one.â
âOkay, letâs work with that,â I said as we moved three inches in the thick traffic. Lenny was doing something on his cell.
âThereâs an accident a mile ahead. You canât get off before it,â Lenny informed me. It was ten a.m.; we had a good hour before our flight to Cayman.
âJames, give me your best. Can you do the spoof?â That would be the text from Santo to Gonzalez that I was coming for a two p.m. meeting.
âYes,â James said quickly, âthatâs not a problem. Itâs the call forwarding. If you knew exactly when the guy would be calling him⦠but Iâm thinking you need a window for thatâten minutes, thirty minutes, something like that. Thatâs a lot of time to block a phone. And then you have to know which of his three phones your guy will be calling. I canât do all three. I might get caught just doing the one.â
âYes, I see,â I said. My mind was racing. This was field work, where I had to make critical decisions with whatever information was available. It was a hell of a lot different than sitting safely behind a computer and tapping keys. I would be wide open and exposed in that meeting, and if something did not go right⦠Shit!
âCheck your grid. Seventy percent of Garciaâs calls to Santo were to the first cell phone,â I said, referencing the first few numbers from memory. âDo you see that?â
âOkay. Thatâs a high-percentage probability.â
âRight. Look, there may not even be a call; everything might just flow. But I canât rely on hope. I have to assume for the worst. You need to forward that incoming call to Lenny.â
âMy confidence level on that is⦠I believe I can do that.â
What was that? I thought. One or two on a scale of ten?
âHereâs another thing. Youâll be hearing everything in real time. My cell will be on, and youâll be on that too.â
âThat will help. Incidentally, I got
