Phone

The telephone. It’s everywhere and does everything, as ubiquitous as death and taxes. It pays your bills, runs your life, gets what you want when you want it. Or when somebody wants it back. Almost anything can happen when you pick one up.

“Hello, is this Gerald? Gerald Fast … uh … 1210 Poplar? Cool! Ger, it’s me Nate, from HiFi Credit ... Whadda ya mean who ... Yeah that’s right, the TV guy … Oh yeah, now you remember, that thing you got in your living room called a television. You owe this month’s rental on it … Yeah, 75 big ones my man ... Uh, yeah, that’s right, only four more to go and she’s all yours … You’re coming in tomorrow morning first thing, right? So, it’s Sunday we’re open … Good boy, see ya tomorrow.”

Well that was easy. I’m up to a hundred forty so far. How ‘bout you Lise, you feeling any better today? Only a hundred and ten eh, well it’s not gonna do it you know. Mr. C. wants 200 calls a shift now. Whadda you mean since when. Since last week, but yeah, right, you weren’t here Tuesday Wednesday. No, I remember now, he called us all in and told us to up the numbers. He’s worried the outstanding’s getting higher than collected again, so he wants us to call even if the first payment is late. Yeah, I know that sucks but what are ya gonna do it’s his company.

“Hello, Tom Crabbe? No don’t ask who’s calling, you know who it is. He owes me money and I want it. You get him on the phone right now ... Tom, it’s Nate, the guy you hung up on last week ... Whadda you mean no I never yes you did you big dummy and you know why too ... You owe me three months rent on all that crap you’ve got piled up in your living room ... Yeah well it’s my crap and I want it back … No, you told me last month you got a steady job with your cousin doing roofing so you should have all kinds of money now, so I want my cut ... What do you mean no money? Quit drinking’ it, spend some of it on the wife and kids and give me the rest and then maybe I’ll stop calling every week … I don’t care whose bedtime it is. The only story you’re gonna to read them is how daddy lost the big TV so they can’t watch Big Bird any more … Oh you don’t read, eh? Fine by me so long as you pay me what you owe me. And that means tomorrow or Big Bird goes bye bye. Okay? Bye.”

Hey Lise you should have heard this one, he had a baby crying in the background and everything. As if that’s going to make a difference. Geez you’d think he’d learn by now. I’ve been dealing with this guy for years, you know the one, Pete the cheat? Yeah that’s him.
