CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Lacey couldnât help feeling a little jealous that while she was busy wishing for a different family, Andrew had been part of the perfect one all along. When he called and invited her to his parentsâ house for Sunday lunch, she agreed immediately.
Now as she drove to their home, she couldnât get her mind off her mother. As expected, Miranda had disappeared when Lacey emerged from her bedroom. A quick glance around told her that she hadnât taken anything big. Lacey had gone to the kitchen and found that snacks and drinks were missing, along with the extra cash she kept in the top cabinet for emergencies. She wasnât sure how long it would take her to replace that money, but she knew it could have been much worse.
She hesitated in the Hartleyâs driveway, not sure whether to go to Andrewâs guest house, or to the main house. While she was trying to decide, Andrew appeared from the front door of the guest house and waved. She smiled and felt a little spark of peace wash over her. She hadnât gone to church that morning, it was too much after the incident with Miranda. She wasnât sure she could stand in church and sing about a good God who had given her Miranda for a mother.
Andrew walked over as she parked her car and opened her door. âHi,â he said. When she stood up, he pulled her into a hug. She melted into his arms. She begged herself not to cry as the emotions of the week all rose to the surface.
âHey,â she said, trying to sound happy.
âHow are you?â He asked, looking deep into her eyes.
Lacey was very aware of his hands on her arms. She smiled. âIâm all right.â
âAre you really?â
âYeah. Mirandaâs gone, and thatâs a step in the right direction.â She had texted him the night before to tell him her mom was leaving, but she didnât give him many details.
âIâm just glad that youâre here.â He reached out and took her hand and led her towards the main house. âOh, and my mom is thrilled that youâre here too.â
Lacey laughed, but the sound felt hollow in her chest. She didnât know what it was like to have a mom who was happy for you.
Inside the house Lacey was taken aback at the size. The foyer, with hardwood floors, opened up to a spacious living room with a view of the kitchen. Andrewâs parents were in the kitchen and Lacey could hear the sounds of pots and pans bagging together.
âHey, Mom,â Andrew called out.
âHi, sweetheart,â Theresa turned and wiped her hands on her apron and came to give Andrew a hug, then she turned to Lacey.
âMom, Dad, this is Lacey.â
âHi,â Lacey tried to say, but before the word was out of her mouth, she felt Theresaâs arms around her.
âHello! Itâs so nice to meet you.â
Lacey swallowed hard as the hug lasted, and then when Theresa pulled back, she managed to say, âItâs nice to meet you too.
