Chapter Forty-One

I parked behind Johnny’s large SUV.

He stood outside his vehicle wearing a black suit with black sunglasses on his face.

With the map rolled up in my hand, I exited my car.

He smiled at me, took off his sunglasses, and shook his head.

“Been wondering where you’ve been,” he said. “I feel like it’s been forever.”

“It hasn’t been that long,” I said.

“A second not near you feels like a lifetime, Allie,” he said.

I rolled my eyes.

It was going to be like that with Johnny Barby. Which shouldn’t have surprised me one bit.

“Quick question,” he said. He put his hands. “How’s Ben?”

“Really?”

“Dead serious.”

“Why?”

“I have flowers on the passenger seat,” he said. “Not sure if I should give them to you or not.”

“Are you afraid Ben will come beat you up?”

“So that means you two are still together,” Johnny said.

“Correct.”

He nodded. “Are you happy with him?”

“Johnny, seriously?”

“It’s an honest question,” he said. “You’re calling me out of the blue.”

“And that signals you to buy flowers and think I’m looking for some attention?”

“You never know,” Johnny said. “It’s best to be prepared for every scenario.”

“And what scenario is this?” I asked. “What else did you do besides get flowers?”

Johnny smirked.

“Johnny…”

“I’ve got a room,” he said. “It’s a thinking room. But, you know, it can be used for other things.”

“I regret calling you,” I said. “I had something important to talk to you about.”

I stepped back and Johnny moved toward me. “Wait a second, Allie. What did you expect from me? This is who I am. I have a one track mind. Well, two track mind. Catching bad guys. And enjoying good women.”

He smirked.

His words were smooth.

But not that smooth.

I shook my head. “You know, I feel bad for anyone who falls for that line.”

“It works about half the time,” Johnny said. “What do you want to talk about?”

Just like that, Johnny was deflated.

Which meant we could talk.

We went into a cafe and Johnny ordered coffees.

Just what I needed.

More coffee.

“Talk to me,” Johnny said as he sat down.

“There’s a lot going on.”

“Four murders.”

“So you’ve heard.”

“Of course I have,” he said. “I’ve been waiting for the call.”

“What call is that?”

“Your call,” he said with a wink. “To bring me in. It’s getting busy in that little town over there, isn’t it? I figure by now people are whispering. Laura has to be going out of her mind. Feeling heat from the county and the state, I’m sure. Knowing if she says too much, people will panic. But if she doesn’t say enough, she’s putting everyone in harm’s way.”

“That’s all valid, Johnny,” I said. “Only I’m not here to talk about that.”

“You don’t want my help?” Johnny asked.

“I want to show you something. Throw a theory at you. But I need you to listen to me carefully.”

“I’m listening,” Johnny said. “I won’t even look at you, Allie. So I don’t get distracted by your beauty.”

I sighed.

He showed his hands. “Too far. Sorry.”

I put the map on the table. “I have a crazy theory, Johnny. I’m stretched to my max here.
