Chapter Thirteen

Forty-five minutes later, I was standing inside the reception area of the mayor’s office, trying not to look too triumphant. As I’d hoped, Norman’s receptionist had eaten up every line I’d fed her about needing to investigate Norman’s office for his own safety. I told her that I was working on the case—I just didn’t mention that I wasn’t working on it in an official capacity.

Norman’s secretary had already shown that she considered me someone who cared about Norman, so she hadn’t questioned me too much. She’d only been confused as to why I couldn’t wait until the morning to speak with Norman directly. I made up some story that I was worried that the murderer might strike again if he wasn’t stopped right away.

I felt a little bit guilty, but not overly so. I made myself feel better by telling myself that whatever I found here, I would immediately take to Mitch. I had no doubt that he would still be at the police station working, even though it was getting late. When he had a murder case this fresh, he tended to be at the office quite late. I was already smiling as I imagined walking into his office and proudly depositing concrete evidence on his desk that Norman had been involved in all sorts of unsavory things.

First though, I had to figure out exactly what those things were that he shouldn’t have been involved in.

Norman’s receptionist looked uneasily around after she let me in, and then glanced at her watch.

“I’ll be quick, I promise,” I said, worried that she was going to change her mind before I even had a chance to get started.

She fidgeted slightly. “Oh, I don’t want to rush you. I know what you’re doing is important. It’s just that I had a date to go see a nine P.M. movie with this guy I really like and if I don’t get going soon…”

I glanced at my watch. It was eight-forty-five. If she didn’t leave now, she was going to be late for the movie. I felt badly, but I didn’t want to come back again the next day. That would be too late!

“I’ll be quick, I promise. I can take what I need with me to look at and then bring it back in the morning.”

I was already making plans to dump as many folders as I could in a pile and take them with me. Norman would be furious when he arrived in the morning to discover so many missing folders, but he wouldn’t have much of a leg to stand on with his fury if I had evidence that he had been involved in fraud and murder.

But Norman’s secretary was shaking her head. “I really don’t want to rush you. Do you think maybe I could just leave my key with you and you could lock up when you leave? I could swing by the Drunken Pie Café in the morning on my way to work and get the key from you.
