Chapter Thirteen

Detroit, Michigan, USA

10th of September, 4:50 p.m. (GMT-4)

Leader sat at her desk, whittling away at the stack of paperwork that had collected since the last time she’d surfaced and spent a work day as Angelica Zervo, CEO of Discretion Minerals. The penthouse office was covered in expensive furniture and modern decor, a consumptive display befitting an executive of her standing. It was part and parcel of the alias she’d cultivated over the decades, along with the power suits, luxury cars, and fine dining. As she signed the last of the flagged signature lines, she buzzed her assistant.

“Yes, Ms. Zervo?” Ethan Helms’s thin voice answered the electronic summons.

“I’m finished. You can review it now and see if there is anything missing before I leave for the day.” It was her way of informing him she wouldn’t be in this office tomorrow.

“As you wish, Ms. Zervo,” he replied automatically. In less than a minute, the slim blond had entered, collected the documents, and left.

Leader rose and stretched her legs. She looked out the window and smiled at the late afternoon sun. As far as she was concerned, that was the nicest part of the suite. She tugged at her collar and undid the top button and sleeves. She’d been in business meetings all day and had to dress for the part, and she was looking forward to changing out of her corporate costume and into a pair of worn jeans, a soft linen tunic, and warm cardigan.

She was accustomed to taking off and putting on identities. Over the years, she’d gone by many names. Even Leader was an invention of convenience. As much as she hated the kabuki, compartmentalization made it easier for everyone.

A light blinked on her phone console and she answered with a curt “Yes.”

“Everything looks in order, Ms. Zervo,” Helms politely informed her.

“Good. Do you have everything you need to type up the minutes and prepare the contracts?” she asked, giving her assistant one last chance to access her personage.

“Yes, Ms. Zervo,” he confirmed.

She let out a small smile and her gray eyes danced a little. “Then I’ll be on my way.” She slid her short arms into her jacket sleeves and grabbed her briefcase before exiting her office. On the other side of the door, Helms stood waiting for her.

“I’ve summoned the elevator for you. Have a good evening, Ms. Zervo.” When she scanned the area, there was no hint of the mountain of paperwork he’d just taken from her office. Everything had already been put away; Helms was nothing if not efficient.

“Thank you, Ethan.” She nodded in acknowledgement. “I’ll be back in the office early next week. You know where to reach me if something comes up.”

She entered the elevator and rode down to the parking level. There she changed carriages and presented her titanium key. The elevator lowered into the earth.

Angela Abrams put away her magazine and straightened her posture when she saw Leader was coming down in the screen next to her. There were few exceptions to security protocol, and Leader was one of them.
