Chapter 10

Monday, 6th August, 07:45,

Westminster, London.

Kevin Ramsey sat down at the twelve-seater metal conference table in ten Downing Street and looked at Prime Minister Jacobs who was flanked by his Chief of Staff.

‘I’ve heard from President Salenko that your agents are now in their custody. I know this wasn’t easy for you Kevin, but we had to do this.’ Jacobs looked exhausted and didn’t look to have slept.

‘It was an impossible situation sir, and I still don’t agree with it. We’re condemning our best agents to a death sentence.’ He looked at both men, who gave nothing away. ‘Do we know their intentions?’

‘No, and we’re not going to. They are political casualties and we need to move on. I’ve spoken to the American President and he’s taken the news well and is confident any threat to the potential peace in the Middle East has been nullified. Any future trade deals will also remain unaffected.’

‘And Salenko?’

‘He expressed his gratitude to us and that he hopes his goal of achieving peace in the Middle East is still a possibility. I said we would support him wherever possible.’

‘Everyone’s happy then.’ Ramsey couldn’t help but sound sarcastic.

‘You’re going to find that doing your job Kevin, there will be times when you can’t always, please everyone. In this scenario, losing two men to maintain the peace and our international relations was a small price to pay.’

‘Is that what I tell their families, sir?’

Jacobs leant back in the leather chair and studied his Chief of MI6. ‘Are we going to have a problem? I need to know you’ve moved on and you’re loyal to me, Kevin. There can be no in-between.’

Ramsey bit his tongue and tried to bury his feelings. ‘There is no problem, sir. I will make sure their families are informed and supported. I’m still happy to do this job if you want me to.’

Jacobs got up to leave. ‘I do. The outcome may not be the one you wanted but it was the right thing for the country. I can see you need some time, but we had no other choice I’m afraid. If anything else comes up I want you to inform me as soon as possible.’

‘Of course, sir.’ He watched them leave and thought about Harris in Aknīste. Had there been any developments or was he already dead along with Hawk and Deane? There was no time to think as his mobile phone broke the silence. ‘Ramsey.’

‘It’s Walker, I’m starting to make some progress.’

‘Don’t tell me Ferec is talking.’

‘At times.’

Ramsey got up from the chair. Time and time again Walker had come through when interrogating suspects and it sounded like he may have done it again. ‘Meaning?’

‘He’s disclosed that Jozef Kiprich wasn’t working alone. He was reporting to someone and that someone also controls Mikhail Salenko. Apparently, he has no real power.’

‘Salenko is a puppet. Is that what he’s saying?’

‘Effectively, yes.’

‘Can he prove it?’

‘That’s the problem. He may be able to but he wants a full pardon first.’

Ramsey sighed. ‘You’re kidding, right?’

‘No, sir.
