Chapter 14

“You’re gonna regret foolin’ around right under Mr. Collin’s nose. He won’t put up with your shenanigans again.”

Shaken by Millie’s tactics, Sarah conjured all the bravado she could. “Take your hand off me.” Sarah tried a drop-dead look. It didn’t do any good. Those talons retained their hold.

“Make me.” Millie stared down at the girl, her eyes glowing with malevolence. “You can try, but no matter what you do I’ll be here long after you’re gone. And so will Libby.”

Millie’s threat turned the frightened woman into a protective mother. “Over your dead body,” Sarah hissed, “and Jasmine’s and Dos’…and Rose’s.” She’d almost goofed. Leaving Rose out of the equation wouldn’t do. Millie would’ve picked up on that immediately.

“Seems to me you’re out-numbered, Missy. It might be your shrimpy dead body you have to worry about.”

A chill shivered up Sarah’s spine. Millie looked capable of doing murder. Maybe she’d better take her warning to heart. And she would—after she put some distance between them. She kicked Millie’s shin, a maneuver she’d become adept at, and ripped her arm from the housekeeper’s grasp. Stepping back, she eyed the woman’s red face and quivering chin.

“I may be small, but I’ve had to look after myself and Libby for years. I learned a few things. Don’t write me off as easy to handle. You might live to regret the mistake.”

Sarah moved like lightning into the house. She didn’t trust the much larger woman not to chase her down and carry out her threat. She hurried up the stairs and into her room. After locking the door she examined her aching arm. Red marks identified the places where bruises would appear later. Blood seeped from scratches received when she pulled away from Millie’s talons. She would enjoy showing her battle scars to Dos.

He viewed the damage sooner than she expected. The pounding on her door caused her to drop the cloth she been using to clean her wounded arm. She approached the vibrating door with caution. “Who’s there?”

“Let me in,” Dos bellowed.

Fine, Sarah thought. He’ll see my arm now. She swung the door open. Dos stood before her like a fire-breathing dragon. The other dragon stood right behind him, a fiery red handprint decorated on side of her face, blood dripped down her other cheek. Sarah’s shocked gasp disappeared under Dos’ roar.

“You want to tell me why you attacked Millie? I just don’t understand you, woman. What’s got into you?”

Millie’s smug smile didn’t go with her sniffling at all. Sarah stared at the actress wannabe, trying to guess which way she would jump next. She swung her gaze to Dos. Her enraged husband didn’t look willing to listen to reason, but Sarah only had one story, the truth. So she waded in with her version.

“I didn’t attack her. She attacked me.” Sarah extended her arm to show him the marks.

“What? That little place?”

Sarah looked down. The cold cloth had done a superb job. Red splotches had disappeared. Scratches had dimmed to pink lines. Compared to Millie’s injuries, Sarah’s seemed superficial.
