before all talk vanishes.

The cabins will be built.

The fireplaces.

I’ll be long gone,

ripped apart. I hope

I get a hand on my heart,

so I can tear it out

and hold it like a sweet roll,

toss it to an enemy.

A river better jump

its bank for my head.

Nose

Why weren’t we Polish

noblemen like normal people?

My father away at cavalry;

my mother on a divan chatting

with the Cracow Count,

her nose one stroke

from the Japanese watercolor

on the wall at her back.

It is the indefatigable Count

who offers the comparison

and my mother pretends

she does not hear, tapping

a mahogany arm, a fist

of blond hair in a bun.
