CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Olivia and Karen went to look for Morgan and Rob Miller. They found both men in Morgan’s office. Karen was pleased to offer some good news for a change.

‘Vishal’s started talking,’ she said as she took a seat next to Rob.

‘Excellent,’ Morgan said. ‘How much did he know about the Perrys’ operation?’

‘Quite a lot,’ Olivia said before Karen could answer. ‘Once he started talking, it all came out. To summarise, the man pretending to be Aleksy Iskow is Charlie Cook. He is a key player and organises transportation for the work in Lincoln. He was in the garage when you and DS Hart turned up because he was looking for something Aleksy had taken from him.’

Morgan looked at Karen. ‘The notebook?’

‘That’s my guess,’ Karen said. ‘Though Vishal didn’t know what he was looking for.’

‘So Cook’s Haulage is definitely involved?’ Rob asked.

‘Yes, though Vishal only had dealings with Charlie,’ Olivia said. ‘He says he doesn’t know what happened to Aleksy.’

‘Aleksy took the notebook. Maybe he was planning to use it as evidence against the Cooks,’ Karen suggested. ‘Either that or a way to blackmail them. I wonder—’

‘It’s one possibility,’ Rob said, cutting her off before turning to Olivia. ‘Excellent work.’

Olivia patted her perfectly coiffed hair, quite happy to take all the credit.

‘That makes sense, Karen,’ Morgan said. ‘I imagine Charlie would have been very keen to get the notebook back.’

‘We don’t know for sure it was the notebook Charlie was looking for,’ Olivia said. ‘Still, I suppose it’s one option.’

‘Let’s call a briefing,’ Rob said. ‘I think we need to update everyone, including DI Freeman and his team. I’ll pop upstairs to ask your superintendent if she wants to attend.’

Karen watched as Rob Miller swaggered out of Morgan’s office, followed by Olivia. She was tempted to moan about Olivia to Morgan but remembered the superintendent’s words. The best way to handle officers like DI Miller and DC Webster was to show them exactly how capable the Lincolnshire police were.
