As Liza stared out the kitchen window, admiring the first crocuses and daffodil shoots to poke through the rapidly melting snow, she saw the Jeep pull up to the house. Moments later, the back door burst open and in strode the full glory of Nurse Cara, wearing the cagiest smile. “You slept with Charlie?”

Liza felt the blood draining from her face. Thank God Adam wasn’t home. “He told you?”

“Nope.” Cara’s grin spread. “So it’s true. Ha. Works every time.”

Damn it. “How did you...?”

“I stopped in on Estelle today. I was in the neighborhood, wanted to see how she was doing. You little slut,” Cara said with a teasing twinkle in her eye.

Liza’s back tightened. Why would Charlie have told his mother? The official story was that they dated for a few weeks but decided to remain friends—strictly Platonic. Adam didn’t know about her one, fumbling, drunken, humiliating attempt to seduce his brother.

“So was it any good?”

Liza glared at her neighbor, who was awaiting her response with a cocked eyebrow. “He’s still gay, isn’t he?”

Still grinning, Cara plucked two beers from the fridge, opened them, and handed one to Liza. “I think I have a little more respect for you now. Welcome to the dirty bitch club.”

“Please don’t tell anyone.” Liza slunk into a chair. “And please don’t tell Adam.”

“He doesn’t know?”

She picked at the foil label on the bottle, wondering which way to go with this. If she could trust Cara. “It’s just too weird and Biblical. Charlie and I both decided to forget it ever happened. It was a long time ago. We were drunk, it was a big, stupid mistake, and I want it to go away.”

“I did the UPS guy once. Before I met Dan.” Great, Liza thought. Now Cara was going to spill her sex secrets. This, from a woman who did it with her husband on the Miller’s front lawn after their Halloween party. Next to Cara, Liza felt like the Virgin Mary. “It was those brown shorts,” Cara said. “They made me crazy. Except after that he kept bringing flowers. I had to move.”
