CHAPTER 28
Loraine canât forget his face. The way he looked at her, his eyes moving across her nose, eyes, lips. Deliberately slow. Goosebumps stand up on her skin, and she shivers. They had met four times now, and each time it got better. The sex happened last time, near here, out in the open. That excited her, and she knew he enjoyed it. Tonight, she knows, will be more of the same.
Her heart grows cold at what will happen after. She has to tell him. There is no way she can go on cheating on her husband. Itâs wrong, and she knows it. Mark and her need to sort things out, but what sheâs doing now is just complicating things more. Yes, the release is worth it. Mark has become so wooden in bed. Ten minutes and itâs over. Sometimes even less. And that too, when it actually happens. But she knows Mark loves her, and she wants to rediscover that flame.
Loraine looks up at the sky, wondering if it will rain. Funnell shaped clouds are pressing white fingers in the darkening dome, barely visible. She wonders if itâs going to rain. Her feet crunch on dry twigs. A couple of storks wait patient on the still water of the pond as she hurries past it. The woods press on all sides, itâs almost silent here, save the flutter of a birdâs wings, or the scurry of an animal in the undergrowth.
Loraine sees him stand up as she approaches the tree. Itâs the same spot where they met last time. Heat rises to her face when she thinks of what they did.
âYouâre late,â he says.
âSorry.â Loraine simply stands there as he steps forward and grabs her in his arms. His lips are rough on her face, and she moans before she knows what sheâs doing.
Then she puts her palms on his chest and pushes him away. He smiles and resists.
âNo.â Loraine shakes her head. âI need to talk.â
He lets go of her. Loraine breathes heavily. Desire is coursing in her bloodstream, and itâs difficult, but she has to do this.
âThereâs something you should know.â
Heâs watching her, dark eyes focused on her face. Loraine swallows. âIâm married.â
He remains silent. Loraine says, âI know I donât wear a ring. I thought it was over between us, but I realise that I still love him.â
She canât see his face, doesnât know what heâs thinking. âWill you say something? Please?â
His voice has steel in it. âWhat about us?â
This is harder than Loraine thought it would be. âIâm sorry. It has to end here. I canât see you anymore.â
They stand still for a while, the silence broken only by the occasional nocturnal sound. He comes closer to her, and she can smell his aftershave. Her heart beats faster. He bends down to kiss her, and she moves back but his arm comes around pulling her closer. Loraine submits as his lips sink into hers. They kiss, and then he lets go. Loraine is left panting, wanting more.
