KATE

My butt aches from riding the bull so many times, and my cheeks still feel pinched from all my smiling. I haven’t laughed this hard in as long as I can remember.

And it’s nice.

Laughing. Feeling carefree. Not stressing.

It’s really nice, actually.

So nice, I can’t even let my insecurities bring me down as I peek at Macklin and smile.

With one hand resting on the steering wheel and another on my thigh, his lips mouthing the lyrics to some old Billy Joel song, I can’t help but check him out.

So. Damn. Attractive.

As if he can feel my gaze, he looks at me, his blue eyes practically glowing from the light of the dashboard. “Did you have fun tonight?”

“I had a blast.” My grin spreads. “Seriously. Thank you.”

“Thank you for saying yes.”

“Thank you for asking me,” I quip, rubbing at the tightness in my cheeks, my smile softening. “Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I had this much fun.”

“Me either. Next time, I’ll have to get you on the dance floor.” He parks in front of my house and opens the driver’s side door, climbing out. I watch in awe, blown away that I’m the girl in his passenger seat, I’m the girl he asked on a date, and I’m the girl he’s interested in as he walks to my side and opens the passenger door.

“Only if you brush up on your country dancing skills so I don’t look like an idiot,” I remind him.

With a wink, he replies, “I’ll see what I can do.”

Hand in hand, we walk toward the porch. I don’t know what to say. I don’t know what to do. It feels different this time. This first date. I’m not sure if it’s because we’ve already hung out as friends or if he’s already proven he’s more mature than every other guy I’ve dated. But I can feel it.

The differences.

The positives stacking up, one after the other.

The comfort.

The trust.

I was even able to let go tonight. To not focus on my surroundings or what to do if I had a seizure. I was able to just…be.

It’s weird. How it’s always in the back of my mind. The possibilities. The potential issues or repercussions. But tonight? All the warnings were silenced. And it was incredible.

As we reach my front door, I try to calm my breathing, my nerves getting the best of me as our date winds to an end, and I smile at him. Because I don’t want to go inside. I don’t want this night to be over. Not yet.

“Hey, Kate?” Mack murmurs.

My eyes meet his. “Yes?”

“If I kiss you, will you pull away?”

My pulse quickens. “No.”

“And if I ask if you’re busy tomorrow night, will you say you have plans?”

I smile. “No.”

“And if I tell you I like you, will you tell me you only want to be friends?”

“No,” I repeat, rising onto my tiptoes and grabbing the edge of his leather jacket to keep my balance.

He runs his hand along my cheek, lifts my chin an inch higher, and leans closer.
