KATE
My butt aches from riding the bull so many times, and my cheeks still feel pinched from all my smiling. I havenât laughed this hard in as long as I can remember.
And itâs nice.
Laughing. Feeling carefree. Not stressing.
Itâs really nice, actually.
So nice, I canât even let my insecurities bring me down as I peek at Macklin and smile.
With one hand resting on the steering wheel and another on my thigh, his lips mouthing the lyrics to some old Billy Joel song, I canât help but check him out.
So. Damn. Attractive.
As if he can feel my gaze, he looks at me, his blue eyes practically glowing from the light of the dashboard. âDid you have fun tonight?â
âI had a blast.â My grin spreads. âSeriously. Thank you.â
âThank you for saying yes.â
âThank you for asking me,â I quip, rubbing at the tightness in my cheeks, my smile softening. âHonestly, I donât remember the last time I had this much fun.â
âMe either. Next time, Iâll have to get you on the dance floor.â He parks in front of my house and opens the driverâs side door, climbing out. I watch in awe, blown away that Iâm the girl in his passenger seat, Iâm the girl he asked on a date, and Iâm the girl heâs interested in as he walks to my side and opens the passenger door.
âOnly if you brush up on your country dancing skills so I donât look like an idiot,â I remind him.
With a wink, he replies, âIâll see what I can do.â
Hand in hand, we walk toward the porch. I donât know what to say. I donât know what to do. It feels different this time. This first date. Iâm not sure if itâs because weâve already hung out as friends or if heâs already proven heâs more mature than every other guy Iâve dated. But I can feel it.
The differences.
The positives stacking up, one after the other.
The comfort.
The trust.
I was even able to let go tonight. To not focus on my surroundings or what to do if I had a seizure. I was able to justâ¦be.
Itâs weird. How itâs always in the back of my mind. The possibilities. The potential issues or repercussions. But tonight? All the warnings were silenced. And it was incredible.
As we reach my front door, I try to calm my breathing, my nerves getting the best of me as our date winds to an end, and I smile at him. Because I donât want to go inside. I donât want this night to be over. Not yet.
âHey, Kate?â Mack murmurs.
My eyes meet his. âYes?â
âIf I kiss you, will you pull away?â
My pulse quickens. âNo.â
âAnd if I ask if youâre busy tomorrow night, will you say you have plans?â
I smile. âNo.â
âAnd if I tell you I like you, will you tell me you only want to be friends?â
âNo,â I repeat, rising onto my tiptoes and grabbing the edge of his leather jacket to keep my balance.
He runs his hand along my cheek, lifts my chin an inch higher, and leans closer.
