Chapter 17

She had to fix the curtain in the nursery tonight. It wouldn’t do to have anyone looking in and seeing the bairns. If only she didn’t feel so poorly. Perhaps she could leave it till the morning. Her Next Door had company, so they wouldn’t be snooping around looking through her windows tonight, she was sure. She could hear their bursts of laughter and loud chatter through the wall. But no, it wouldn’t take long to screw the detached curtain pole and curtains back in place and hang the new nets.

She went into the nursery. The bairns were all tucked up neat and tidy in their cots. The room looked so clean and pretty with the lovely blue and white teddy bear wallpaper she had put up herself. She would need the toolbox and the step ladder, at the back of the kitchen broom cupboard. In the kitchen she turned on the light and suddenly felt she must lean against the sink. Her legs felt wobbly, and her head was spinning. No wonder, she thought. She hadn’t eaten anything for three, or was it four, days? She hadn’t been able to face food, and her stomach felt uncomfortably swollen and full despite being empty.

Pull yourself together, woman, she scolded herself. Get this job done then you can go to bed.

She let go of the sink, tried to straighten up, and then she was falling. There was a crack and an explosion of pain, then everything was black.
