The average American intake is 600–800 mg of calcium daily, so you would only need to take six to seven calcium carbonate tablets a day to reach the upper limit of safe ingestion (2,000 mg daily) if you are over age 50. If you’re under age 50, it takes eight to nine tablets per day to reach the safe upper limit of intake (2,500 mg daily). Keep in mind that 600–800 mg is just the average daily intake of calcium for adult Americans, and many people—perhaps you too—are consuming much more.

Should you find that you regularly consume a large number of antacid tablets daily, which, when combined with your other dietary sources of calcium, exceeds the safe upper limit for calcium intake each day, it’s important to pay a visit to your doctor to determine alternate treatments. You may need to control your heartburn with a different antacid, or perhaps a histamine-2 blocker, or a proton pump inhibitor.

If you choose to use calcium carbonate antacid tablets, it is important to pay attention to how many you consume every day to avoid ingesting too much calcium.
