Chapter Five

Mira shuddered as chills rippled across her wet body. She reached down and pulled the sheet from the foot of her bed up over Noah and herself.

Noah lay beside her, lifeless. He hadn’t made a sound since he collapsed and his breathing had leveled off. He was probably asleep and for good reason.

She eased up onto her elbows and looked around the room. A shower would be best.

As she started to leave the bed, Noah’s hand gripped her forearm.

“Don’t go.”

“A shower sounds really good right now.”

“It does.” He sat up and pulled her toward him. “But first I want to talk to you.”

Mira laughed. “Noah Donner is into pillow talk? Who would have guessed?”

Noah released her. “I … I just thought that …” He scooted to the edge of the bed. “Never mind.”

Mira’s stomach muscles tightened and she reached out to touch him.

Noah glared down at her hand on his arm.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be a bitch.”

He eased back and the hardened arch of his brow softened. “It’s okay. You don’t have to apologize.”

“I’m not used to this side of you.”

Noah nodded.

“I’m used to the smart-ass Casanova, oozing with charm and clever lines.”

“Mira.” He ran his fingers along her jawline, sending flutters of excitement skittering across her body. “Something’s different.”

Mira tilted her head to the side, curious. “What do you mean?”

“That day in the office, something happened and I don’t think I’ll ever be the same guy you think I am … the guy I used to be.”

“Well, you certainly surprised me tonight.”

Noah leaned in and kissed her on the shoulder. “You surprised me as well.” He brushed her hair away from her shoulder and inched toward her, kissing her neck.

Tingles scattered as an overwhelming feeling of delight washed over her. “How did I surprise you?”

Noah stopped kissing her and looked her in the eyes. “You have passion I had never imagined possible.”

What does that mean? “Why is that?”

“You’re always so quiet, reserved. But underneath there’s this raging fire begging to be stoked.” He shook his head. “I never imagined you’d give me a chance to experience it.”

He is good. Mira laughed. “That makes two of us.”

“So what now?”

“What do you mean?” Mira scooted to the edge of the bed as a sudden flutter of unrest rattled her bones. Where was this conversation heading?

“How do we proceed? Do we just let this stay between us?”

Oh, now I get it. Tears burned her eyes, but she fought them back. She wouldn’t let him see her cry. He doesn’t want the whole world knowing he just screwed me. “I would imagine keeping this quiet is probably best for you.”

“Oh.” He nodded. “I see.”

“Yeah.” Mira grabbed the sheet, wrapped it around her, and headed for the bathroom.

“Does it have to be a secret?”

Mira froze in her tracks. “What do you mean?”

“Do we have to keep this to ourselves or can we just see what happens?”

What is he getting at? “Why would you want to tell people? I’m not exactly trophy material.
