I groan and clutch my stomach with one hand and with the other I push the last plate Sam brought out back toward the center of the table. âI canât eat another bite. But it was so good.â I feel sleepy-eyed the way only a good meal can make someone feel. I got a little tipsy and giggly after the drink Sam brought out, which Edward thought was adorable. I declined a second one because I really wanted to enjoy every second of tonight.
Sam struts up to the table. He delivered every dish himself and waited around for us to take a taste before he walked away.
âHas he ever made bad food?â I ask Edward. I know that Sam can hear me, which makes me bite back a grin.
Edward opens his mouth to answer, but Sam shoves his shoulder. âWatch it, kid,â he says. âIngrates donât get free meals.â
Edward grins. âThere was this one time when he made veal something. It came out chewy and gristly.â
Samâs face hardens. âThat was the meat.â
âAnd then there was another time when his cakes all fell.â
âOld baking soda,â he gripes.
âAnd then once he made the most god-awful cupcakes.â
âPete switched my sugar with salt.â
âOr so he says,â Edward teases.
âIâm going to get your bill ready now,â Sam grouses. He turns to leave. âFucking Judas,â I hear him say. I laugh so hard I have to clutch my stomach again.
âYou love them, donât you?â I ask.
âEvery last one of their sorry asses,â he admits with a sheepish grin. âThey saved me. And they save me a little more every day just by loving me.â
âThey changed your life.â
âThey made me into someone new.â He fidgets with his fork. âI donât know who I would be without them.â
âIâm not nearly as close to them as you are, but I feel the same way,â I admit. I was standing on a street corner when I met Emily and Logan, and Iâve never stood on one since that day. âThey made my life possible. I donât even know how to explain it.â
âYou donât have to explain it. Some things donât require explanations.â
A waitress bustles around the corner and slips a folded piece of paper into Edwardâs hand. He opens it. âThat fucker,â he breathes. The waitress laughs and walks away.
He lays the note on the table. âMay I?â I ask.
âOf course.â He motions for me to go ahead as he reaches into his back pocket and pulls out his wallet. I reach for my purse at the same time.
âLet me pay for half,â I say.
He lays the tips of his fingers on the note and pushes it in my direction. âRead the note.â
The note says: Fuck you very much. Amount due - Zero. Tip your wait staff.
Edward takes out some bills and tosses them onto the table. âCan I help with that, at least?â I ask.
He shakes his head and places his hand at the small of my back to lead me from the room. But as we turn the
