CHAPTER ELEVEN

‘How do we handle this?’ Locker asked Lindsay.

‘We don’t shoot until we see if what that Mexican told us is true. If Dixon is still alive, we don’t want to jeopardize his chances. We’ll try to stop them at a distance until we can see the true situation – that’s provided they don’t come in shooting.’

Frolech carefully checked the sights on his rifle. ‘We don’t know what this Estrada character looks like but if any shootin’ starts, I’ll try to pick off the one givin’ orders.’

‘That’s fine by me,’ his boss told him, ‘but wait till I give the word.’

Locker had his field glasses trained up the valley. ‘They’re just coming into view now,’ he said. ‘I can see what looks like an American in a brown coat and hat riding up front with the leading group.’

‘I told you that Domingo character was lying,’ Avery declared.

‘He looks like a tall, thin fella with a black beard,’ Locker continued. ‘It might be an idea if Jenny has a look through these glasses.’

Hope came back into the girl’s face as she eagerly accepted the binoculars. Making no effort to keep the excitement out of her voice, she told the others, ‘I recognize my father’s coat and hat, I can’t get a good look at his face but I think it’s him.’

‘Time we stopped them,’ Lindsay announced. ‘Herman, put a shot about twenty yards ahead of those riders. Then when they stop I’ll get Locker to call to them. There’s no way we want all that crowd around us during negotiations.’

Frolech’s rifle boomed and a spurt of red dust arose ahead of the advancing riders. As they halted in apparent confusion, Locker emerged from cover, waved his arms and called out in Spanish, ‘Stop there and send in one man, preferably someone who speaks English.’

The horsemen milled about for a while as they discussed the situation and then finally a villainous-looking individual rode out of the group and advanced at a brisk walk. He was adorned with a variety of weapons and sat easily on a wiry, sorrel pony. His face bore a contemptuous grin as he halted his mount a few yards from the party and leaned down on his pelican-bill saddle horn.

Avery walked over to Locker. ‘I want to ask that greaser a few questions as well, so try to keep the conversation in English.’

‘Fair enough,’ the scout agreed, ‘but don’t make yourself too much of a target. I still reckon Estrada intends to kill us if he gets the chance.’

The detective was not convinced. ‘I think that Domingo character was playing games with us. He said that Dixon was dead and yet I can see him over there.’

‘Are you sure? See what Jenny Dixon thinks.’

‘Look at the excitement on her face, Locker. She can see it’s her father.’

The Mexican sat patiently on his horse in front of Locker but looked beyond him as though already counting the number of potential enemies in the background.

The scout asked if he spoke English but the man shook his head.
