‘And that’s your story?’ Manx said, exasperated.

‘Our client has been more than co-operative, Inspector. Mr McLain came here out of his own volition and he’s answered every question to the best of his ability.’

‘He hasn’t said a word,’ Manx said.

‘That’s what he pays us for,’ the other solicitor offered.

‘What about your meeting with Liam Fowler the night Sian was murdered?’

McLain ignored Manx and whispered in his solicitor’s ear who slid an envelope across the table. ‘Signed affidavits from Mr McLain’s wife stating he was at home, with her, when these murders took place. All except for the one at Henllys Hall. You’ll find the key card records for that night show Mr McLain never left the room until the commotion that morning.’

‘The commotion?’ Manx said, shaking his head and addressing McLain. ‘Harden Jones, another close associate of yours, murdered, it’s quite the pattern.’

The third solicitor spoke up. ‘The loss of Councillor Harden Jones is a tragedy, we will be reaching out to his family to extend our condolences. He was a devoted leader and a champion for our project, there’s no reason for my client to have killed Mr Jones.’

‘Other than maybe he knew too much?’ Manx said.

‘You’re clutching at straws, Inspector Manx,’ McLain said, pushing back his chair. ‘No one can ever know too much. Good luck with your enquiries.’
