CHAPTER 19

Naked, except for the loincloth, and in spite of the frigid downpour, Garrison felt his body besieged by a flush of nauseating white heat. The sharp edges of the conduit were pressing into his cheek, drawing blood, but he didn’t notice, or care. He had never heard such an abusive and destructive, yet psychotically brilliant plan. Could this madman pull it off? The conspiracy sounded complete in every detail. A shiver rocketed through Garrison’s body starting from the skin at the back of his neck.

Twenty-four hours! Twenty-four tiny fragments of time to prevent the world’s history from careening out of control, and into the hands of a maniac.

Insanity!

He rolled away from the conduit, but couldn’t summon the strength to stand. There was an imageless thought lashing at the periphery of his mind, something fighting for clarity. But the stress of the day prevented his perception from picking it up. He laid down flat on his back and violently clenched every muscle in his body. Muscles were the controllers of thought. And if they remained taut, rigid with fear, they would forbid additional problems from confusing the current situation. When he released twenty seconds later, a black wave of tension spewed from the pores of his skin and dissipated into the night. Garrison began to breathe deeply and think of his favorite place: the timeless meadow with its surrounding protective mountains. He allowed his mind to drift randomly, searching through the veil of emotion for the elusive, nagging memory. Then, slowly, it began to take shape.

He saw the man walking through the rain toward the center of the compound. Other men paid him respect by keeping their distance. He wore an air of authority.

“Mister Chancellor.” The words had come from the other direction. They had come from the computer man. The two headed into the forest on the unlit path, huddled in private conversation under the umbrella. That name. Chancellor. There was something familiar about it. About him. Suddenly a statement floated through his head from Chancellor’s speech to the mercenaries. “You can chose to become a part of the biggest, most affluent corporation in the world.”

Chancellor. Charles Chancellor, CEO of Chancellor Industries.

Garrison reeled away from the revelation. Why? Chancellor was a billionaire, a man with everything. Garrison tried to recall the newspaper and CNN reports detailing Chancellor’s enterprises. The man had kept an invisible public profile for years, his unavailability lifting him to a legendary status that rivaled that of Howard Hughes. The financial news media continually ran feature stories; however, in lacking quotes or personal interviews from Chancellor, they padded their articles with the well-documented facts of the billionaire’s rise to success.

He had entered college at age fifteen after being advanced three grades in high school. At twenty-three, having acquired a Ph.D. in business finance from Harvard University, Chancellor went to work for a private money management firm in New York City. However, quickly realizing the big money was not going to be made on a commission basis,
