CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

When Philip called her at 8:00 a.m. Thursday, Ellie told him about the email exchange with her father. “So, I guess if you want him to see the pictures I identified, you could make arrangements with Lorraine. But as I thought about it last night, I’m not sure I could really say that I ‘identified’ anyone – just that those pictures might look like the man I saw,” she explained.

Philip had to think quickly. “Let’s talk about that this afternoon,” he said. “I want to get more information from headquarters about the two men you picked out. Since you have Guy’s cell phone number, we can always call him and get together with him tonight. Did he tell you where he is staying in Boston?”

“No, he didn’t, but I could call him now and ask – I don’t think he would be leaving for the airport until this afternoon.”

“No need to do that now. Let’s talk again first. I’ll come by your 2:00 class and we can go from there. I’m borrowing Myron’s extra car, so just tell me where the ‘visitor parking’ is.”

Philip made his call to Lorraine at FBI headquarters in Washington, DC, and by noon had all the information she could provide. He kept the documents she had sent on his iPad, intending to show some or all of them to Ellie in the afternoon. At 1:45 p.m., he arrived in her office.

“I’m here for class!” he announced, smiling. He was curious to see the woman he still sometimes thought of as a little girl teaching college students.

Ellie’s lecture covered several topics connected with cross-cultural, business-to-business marketing by Americans to companies in the Far East. The students were fascinated by the case histories she presented. He noticed that some were not taking notes.

“Because I put all of my lecture material on the university Internet so they can pay attention in class to what we are talking about,” Ellie explained to him later. Philip applauded the versatility of electronic teaching but felt it might make the students lazy – and he told Ellie this. “Philip, it’s a different world from even the time I was in college!” she assured him. “But one thing hasn’t changed – the ones who want to learn, do; some don’t and it’s not because we use electronics.”

They were sitting in a small meeting room in the Business School. Ellie had reserved it for their meeting, not wanting to be interrupted in her office. “What did you find out from headquarters?” she asked Philip, trying not to sound too eager.

Philip flipped to the first screen on his smart phone. “Ellie, the first picture you identified – number ten – was of a criminal who was actually in jail, awaiting trial for another crime, at the time of your mother’s murder. He was Italian-American, twenty-four years old, near-sighted, so he wore glasses. At one time, her may have worn contacts.”
