Christen checked the clock on the wall. It was nine. Looking out of the window below the lights outside showed random figures walking by the store.

Her eyes smarted at the information she’d pored over for hours. Much of it was like a puzzle without all the pieces and it defeated her. “I’m missing something, or maybe I’m just not capable of seeing the whole picture.” She didn’t understand why she readily agreed to shake the core of Jamison’s. Maybe Hank hadn’t done great, but the store was still there. She had hated her mother for so long that she was surprised they were now allies. “What does that make me? Any more of a puppet than Hank is?”

Her cell rang. She picked up the phone and looked at the caller ID. It was unknown to her. “Damn, I’m not in the mood for a cold caller.” Her finger hovered over Accept but she pressed End, or so she thought. A voice echoed near to her ear. Damn, I pressed the wrong button. “Christen Jamison.”

“Hi. Look, I’m sorry.”

“Who are you?” Christen bit her lip.

“Laurel Rogers, Andrea’s friend. We shared dinner together Friday night. Do you remember?”

Christen clenched a fist. “Vaguely.”

“Right, of course. Anyway it was nice. Perhaps we can…well, anyway I just wanted to thank you.”

There was a few seconds of silence.

“You never turned up at the market. I assumed you had forgotten, or, your friend had returned.” Christen sucked in a silent breath.

“I’m sorry for leading you on to think that. Can we have coffee one day, maybe? My treat?”

Christen dropped her gaze to the number on her phone, frowning when it said it was a number she had previously called.

“Thanks, but I’m not into being a third-party castaway. Enjoy your life, Laurel.” Christen ended the call.

“I need to find a life. A safe one where no can hurt me. I’m too old for trying to find romance.” She dropped the phone and picked up a file in front of her.
