Chapter 3

Four days of cleaning, hauling and sorting did put a dent in the overall clutter of the house. Dale was happy he’d pared down the contents of the bedroom he was using to just furniture and bedding and the few possessions he’d brought with him. There was a storage unit in North Carolina that held the remainder of the things he owned, stashed prior to his last deployment. He didn’t have a lot, and nothing he couldn’t do without for a while longer.

As Dale stacked another batch of clothing in the back of his car, to go to Goodwill, he thought about the appointment he’d had that morning. Dr. Lisa Milton was his new shrink. He’d been to two appointments so far, and couldn’t say he was utterly thrilled by his interactions with her. She seemed far too focused on what his family thought about his life choices. His parents weren’t overjoyed that he was gay, but they’d all come to a peace about it.

“Do you talk to your parents often?” Dr. Milton asked.

“Every week or two.”

“Do they pressure you about your lifestyle or your sexuality?”

Lord, he wanted to roll his eyes at that. “No, not particularly. Mom thinks she wants grandchildren but she’ll have to rely on my sister for that.”

Dr. Milton wrote something on her note pad. “Have you dated since the incident?”

“Not really.” He didn’t think owning up to giving a djinn a blowjob was a great idea.

“Perhaps you should look into some casual dating. I think more social interaction would be helpful.”

Dale leaned against the car, staring at the house. Social interaction? How ‘bout some hot randy sex? He felt his face flush. Riadh had been on his way to offering some oral attention to his dick when he’d had a freaking meltdown. He had to hand it to Riadh though. The djinn hadn’t seemed particularly phased. He’d even been incredibly calm and comforting. Damn, proof he wasn’t human? Maybe he ought to let Riadh try again. If he had a better idea of what was coming, maybe he could hold it together.

Stacking plastic storage containers in a box in the kitchen, Riadh looked over his shoulder as Dale came into the room. The man was carrying a thick scrapbook style binder.

“I found this in a cupboard in the living room. It looks like…” Dale hesitated for a moment, “A book of magic spells.”

“Mistress Mildred’s grimoire.”

“You knew about this?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell me.”

Riadh flinched. “No, I didn’t know it was something you wanted to find.”

Dale set the book on the counter. “I didn’t know she had one. I mean, okay, you said she was an adept and she did some magic for people. I guess I thought it was stuff she had just learned. It didn’t occur to me there was an instruction book.”

“Not an instruction book per se. More like an annotated recipe book she developed over her life span. Please don’t read any of it out loud without consulting me. The results could be…bad.
