HE WAS ON CLOUD NINE as he strolled to Phaedra’s apartment for his bachelor party. The minute he’d gotten his hereditary magic back he’d wanted to run to Willow and tell her, but then he remembered his promise that he wouldn’t see her until she was walking down the aisle towards him. He hated the idea of telling anyone else before her so as much as it was going to pain him to do so, he wasn’t going to say a word to Phaedra.

Willow was going to be his wife. He didn’t want to share information with anyone before he shared it with her.

He knocked on Phaedra’s door and within seconds she opened the door. Normally, she kept him out here waiting. He was a little surprised to find her alone. There wasn’t a streamer, balloon or lewd decoration in sight. He couldn’t keep the smile from his face.

She held up an unopened bottle of Lavinia’s apple brandy. “Just you, me and the goods stuff.”

He stepped inside her apartment.

“I know you didn’t want strippers and some big blow out so I just decided to keep it to us... like old times. When you used to whine to me about your daddy issues.” She put her hand to her mouth in mock surprise. “Oh wait, that was only a few months ago.” While she was laughing he playfully punched her in the arm.

“You always got jokes.” He shut the door, came in and dropped onto the floor, leaning back against the sofa. “Open up the brandy.”

She joined him on the floor, stretching her legs out underneath the coffee table. “By the way, if I ever decide to get married and it’s time for you to plan my bachelorette party you better remember the gift I’m giving you tonight...” She waved her arms around the apartment. “No crazy decorations, sashes you have to wear, or silly games you have to play.”

Eli chuckled.

“I promise you, if I see one penis straw or boob top or what have you. It will be your ass.” Phaedra finished as she opened up the brandy. “I’m serious.” She tried to keep from laughing, but soon she was laughing right along with him.

Once she poured brandy for both of them, she raised her cup in the air to make a toast. “To my best friend on the eve of his wedding...” She cleared her throat. “I wish you and Willow all the happiness in the world. I can’t think of someone more deserving than you. Know that I will always have your back, Elias.” They knocked their cups together and drank down some of the fiery liquid.

“That was quite the speech. I hope you saved some for tomorrow, when you have to give another toast.” He couldn’t help teasing her.

“That sappy crap was for your ears only. Tomorrow during my best man speech I’m going to roast you.” She guffawed before swallowing a big gulp of the brandy and pouring herself some more.

It had been a while since he’d really heard Phaedra laugh.
