Chapter 29

Rock grated again and another draft of cool air washed Elias’s scent in. It was enough to increase Caroline’s heartbeat and fill her with unwanted desire. She concentrated on breathing normally, hoping the sensation passed as the izzen entered the room. Elias stopped before the central fire and she was shocked to see his face was badly bruised, all because he’d tried to help herself and Kirsty. She almost went to him to gently touch his skin and sooth the bruises. The way he walked suggested he remained sore all over, and a different desire overcame her as she considered what he’d look like without clothes.

Allyn also headed for the fire. Caroline stood and moved away. Elias had smelled good at Dobbin’s cabin, but after fully transforming into a werewolf, it was as if he’d been made just for her.

“Dobbin says you wish to be escorted to your father,” Allyn said as he warmed his hands.

Caroline struggled to pull her attention off Elias, grateful for the distraction. “Yes.” Fortunately, Elias didn’t look up. She’d have died of embarrassment if he’d caught her staring. She’d desperately wanted to tear Elias apart the other night, but this human desire was far worse. Unless she got used to his scent she’d find herself in bed with him.

“And after that?”

She barely avoided a glance at Kirsty. “We’ll be safe.”

She noticed the human cast to Elias’s features now; the pale blue eyes rather than emerald or jade, the softer, rounder set of his ears, and his lower cheekbones and squarer jaw.

He met her eyes almost as if he’d known she was watching him, and frowned. “Why are you staring at me?”

Something clattered. She blinked, realising she’d dropped the stew. “Sorry,” she muttered. Why didn’t everyone else see he was partly human? He was much bigger than Allyn and the faspane she’d seen, though that might mean little considering she’d seen so few. She’d thought he might have some shivrad heritage, but he smelled nothing like Dobbin. She’d seen clansmen who were just as big. Bigger. Almost compelled, she stepped over the bowl with a silent promise to clean it up later, moving close to the fire. He smelled so good.

“What?” he asked again, his expression genuinely curious as he met her eyes.

“Caroline, what are you doing?” Allyn asked, taking half a step forward.

Did he recognise the wolf rising up within her? Desire gripped her almost as strongly as her murderous instincts the other night, only this time she didn’t want to fight it. “Your scent, Elias… it’s unique,” she whispered, her voice suddenly raspy.

She took a deep breath to try and calm herself, but it only created a desire to press her face against his skin. She broke out in a sweat. Almost against her will, she reached out with trembling fingers and ran the tips along his jaw line. Stubble! She dropped her hand in surprise. The stubble was soft and he’d shaved close, but it was still there.

Elias frowned, touching his jaw. Sudden realisation crossed his face and he swore under his breath.
