CHAPTER TWENTY

A gunshot exploded behind me and I shrieked, covering my head with my arms. I swung around the corner. “Get out of here!” Jack shouted. He barreled into one of the agents.

A gun fired, but I didn’t see what it hit.

“Behind you!” Lance called.

A vine wrapped around my ankle and I crashed to the floor. My chin snapped against the tile. My vision went dark, hazy. I rolled over, growing my vines, but I couldn’t see where to aim. A beast’s vine cut through my leg’s circulation. Through my fuzzy vision, a female beastie sailed over me, teeth bared. I scratched the floor with my fingers, scrabbling to establish some sort of hold, but there was nothing of the smooth tile to grab onto as the vine pulled me closer.

I thrust my spear at the plant beastie. It staggered, a long red smear marring its exposed chest. The plant vines loosened from my leg. I latched onto them with my mind. Let me go.

The beastie’s vines unraveled. I kicked the last one free as Lance forced the plant beast back through the hall, strike after strike. Every few strokes, my head spun and he turned into a colorful blur. I blinked, trying to clear my head from the fall.

Thud-thump. Thud-thump.

“Run!” Jack raced for the door. Lance slashed at the fire beast and took off. The walls danced around me. My speed power was enough to follow Lance to the entrance, where a toughness beastie lumbered toward us, each foot hammering the floor.

Thud-thump. Thud-thump.

Jack slammed the door behind us. I struggled to stay upright. While Lance scaled the ladder, I pressed the palms of my hands against the pebbly concrete.

Thud-thump.

Boom!

The concrete walls shuddered and rubble clattered outside the maintenance shaft. Silence. Then there was a long, loud crack, and the beasties shrieked.

“Go!” Jack waved his whole arm for me to move.

I struggled up the ladder, using my speed to stay oriented. It was slow going, made slower because I didn’t let go of my spear. I was only six rungs up when another explosion shook the building. Jack shouted into his radio, his words jumbled.

At the top of the ladder I tumbled off the platform ledge and collapsed on the roof. Its hot, black shingles stung my skin. The car hovered above the rising shimmer of heat. A giant, gaping hole in the roof spat dust.

Tim finished helping Gwen into the car and rushed to my side. He opened the back door. “Are you okay?” From the way Tim’s eyes searched my face, his expression concerned, I didn’t think he was asking about my physical wounds.

I shook my head. “I think it’s going to be a long time before I’m okay.” I scooted against Lance before Tim had a chance to respond. I appreciated his concern, but we had more important things to worry about at the moment—like getting out of here alive.

Lance repositioned his sword so I could sit. Tim frowned, then hopped in the front seat with Gwen.
