Chapter 6

Gunnar

B eneath the hot stream of water coming from the shower head, I kick myself. As good as the sex with Dakota was, I did a bad thing.

We managed to climb out of bed last night and go on with our evening as though nothing happened. Sort of. Dakota was quiet, almost contemplative. I wanted to ask her how she was feeling, but she spent her evening reading a book by the fire. Occasionally I would look over at her and see her eyes fixed on the window, watching the snow fall in slow, casual waves.

She retired to bed early with a short smile and a prompt goodbye. I was afraid that she was regretting what she'd done. Dakota put her virginity in the hands of a monster, a man whose job it was to teach her right from wrong, a father figure. And instead of pushing her to save herself for someone special or someone she loved, I took her.

Today I need to apologize and tell her that what I did was wrong. After all, she came here for an explicit purpose, and now I've ruined that. Who knows if she'll be able to trust me after I deflowered her.

I climb out of the shower and towel off before the mirror. The tattoos that my friends and I got during our youth taunt me. My mom said I'd regret them one day, but I don't regret them quite like I yearn for the nostalgia. We spent our summers drinking by any lake we could find in the Black Pine Woods. Winters were trickier because the snow sometimes blocked our access to one another, but we made it work. Sometimes we holed up together at one guy's place to wait out a storm. By the end of the week, we'd be so sick of one another we swore we'd never do that again.

All the songs talk about your first time, but they never talk about the last. The last time you and your buddies get together at the lake because two of them are having kids and the other two moved away. The last time you

guys hang out at Pete's Bar in Copper Cross because nobody has time anymore. The last time you talk to one another because you guys are at different places in your lives. For years I've watched people my age settle down and start families. And now at forty two, their kids are in their teens and I'm still at the same place I was almost twenty years ago.

Maybe I was using Dakota in an attempt to feel young again. Or maybe I'm just a guy who can't keep his hands to himself. Whatever it may be, it was wrong and she deserves an apology.

I wrap my towel around my waist and step out of the bathroom.

Dakota's bedroom door is open and I hear rustling downstairs. Despite knowing that I need to say I'm sorry, my pulse quickens. I head to my room and get dressed as quickly as possible, pulling on a pair of jeans and a long sleeve shirt.
