Chapter 02

Carmen Eliel walked to her house. It was far, but not that much so she could walk to the old tavern her parents had left her as an inheritance after dying in the lake where they used to spend their mornings. She remained thinking about the conversation she had had with Gina Fuseli about her daughter Lisa and about what had happened in the church. There was something in that story that made no sense to her. It was as of her thought had been blocked at some point. From every revelation she made about the girl, she felt she has been used by a superior force. It wasn't Carmen Eliel the old woman who lived at the tavern who spoke such things, but it was somebody or something that used her to speak.

The night was pretty dark, but what called her attention was the moon that was above the roof. It was so big that it was hard to believe it was outside the Earth. Carmen wasn't afraid of the supernatural. She had always complained about her parent's condition of being witches and since they were uncovered, she decided she wouldn't follow their steps, even when she had been warned that strange things may happen and that were bonded to her ancestors. Perhaps one day her witch side would be revealed and she wouldn't have to accept it.

This disclosure was enough for her to choose keep living in that place after her parents had died. She was afraid of not being able to control her powers in case she developed them. After her parent's death, nobody visited Carmen. When they were alive, they used to receive every type of visits and from every place. It was weird for her that Almodôvar being such a small town, people from all over the world would come to.

Carmen lived her adolescence in a different way from the rest of the people her age. The Mayor, who was still Carl's father, gave her a monthly payment for her to spend however she wanted. The weird part of it was that the amount was enough for any thirteen—year—old live a whole year. When she was downtown to buy groceries, some people looked at her with pity, which annoyed her. She was fine on her own and she wasn't sad for her parent's death. They were witches and had taught her that death was just a rest of the body and that she could wake up in another life with the body she wanted.

At first she thought her parents had reincarnated in two owls that lived in a window of her bedroom, but months after they disappeared and the moments they were there they showed no human or spiritual feeling to her. Not even the cosmic spiritual energy released after a death seemed to emerge from her house. She didn't feel her parent's presence and then the memories disappeared until she had completely forgotten the sound of their voice. Her parent’s room was never altered.
