Chapter Eleven
Clarabelle’s breath hitched painfully in her throat and she stopped so fast her feet buried themselves awkwardly in the sand. Her palm was suddenly sweaty as she gripped the phone tighter and tried to fight down her quickly rising panic. She recognized that voice. She’d heard it a couple of days before. It was Jacob. And he was calling from inside her parents’ home.
“My mom,” she began, her voice cracking, “what did you do with my—”
“She’s taking a nap,” Jacob replied smoothly. “She doesn’t ever have to know I was here. Not if you play this right.”
Did she dare believe him? Do I dare push it? Clare took a deep breath, pointedly ignoring the confused, concerned look she knew Brooke was giving her. “Okay,” she said carefully. “Tell me what you want.”
“First,” Jacob began, “I don’t want you getting any cute ideas. You’re a means to an end, Ms. Buchannon, nothing more. What we want is Logan Hawke’s head. And the easiest way to separate him from his family, it seems, is through you.”
Frowning, Clare argued, “But you already tried—”
“Did I say you could speak?” Jacob asked shortly. There was a stretch of pause, Clare held her breath, and he continued, “Yes, we already tried something similar. But we’re not kidnapping you this time. You’re coming willingly. More importantly, you’re going to willingly betray his trust.”
Betray…? Her stomach managed to sink a little farther at his words. She was afraid of what that might mean.
Jacob continued without waiting for her response. “Either myself or my brother will be within striking distance of your parents’ home at all times until you’ve fulfilled your end of the bargain. If you want your beloved family to survive, you’ll keep your mouth firmly shut. Tell whoever’s chauffeuring you around whatever you need to evade suspicion, but if you say a word about what we’re really discussing, their blood will be on your hands. Am I clear?”
Clare swallowed heavily as her body slowly went numb. “Yes,” she said softly.
“Good. Now go home and wait for your instructions.” Jacob disconnected nearly as soon as the words were out of his mouth.
Several more seconds ticked by before Clare lowered her phone and returned it to her pocket. What am I supposed to do? Do I play along, knowing they’ll probably ask me to do something terrible? Do I call Logan? Do I tell Brooke?
She wasn’t a complete idiot. Brooke’s apartment had been empty when they burned it to the ground, but Earl’s had been full of customers and employees. The fire at the diner had started in the kitchen, where the vast majority of the staff had gathered. Obviously Jacob and his family weren’t afraid to endanger innocent bystanders to get what they wanted. Which meant her family really wasn’t safe. Nor would they be for a while if their enemy was really sticking around.
“Clare?” Brooke asked, moving to stand in front of her and planting her hands on her hips. She was frowning. “What’s going
