Chapter Ten
Dillon stood emotionless staring at the tarmac outside the panoramic windows in the airport. He could hear his brother laughing as he tossed a pack of chips toward Ben. He felt Jon’s hand grasp his shoulder. He knew he shouldn’t have asked Jon to accompany him, but he’d feared if there wasn’t someone there, he might fall apart in front of Ben. And that wasn’t what he needed right now. He felt himself sink comfortably into Jon’s arms. He felt the wave of emotion build in his throat. “I’ve got to go.” He turned, nearly toppling the trash can beside him, running toward the bathroom.
He stood in the bathroom, the wall of mirrors reflecting the ashen expression of a lost man. He saw his handsome companion come in behind him. Jon put his arm around his waist. He turned to look into Jon’s eyes. He didn’t say a word but his expression was comforting, and strangely firm. He fell against Jon’s chest, sobbing hysterically. “Oh God, I’m so scared. I’ve got to go out there and tell my brother goodbye, maybe forever. How the hell am I going to be able to do what’s right for Ben?” His questions were broken by long gasping breaths in between sobs. Jon stood silent, his firm grasp felt like the only friendly thing in his life right now.
“For starters,” Jon said, as Dillon buried his face in his chest, “Cullen is probably the smartest, and most talented guy I’ve met, outside of you of course.” He smiled broadly.
Dillon looked up into his deep brown eyes. The color was so intense they were nearly black. Dillon chuckled at the attempt to lighten the mood.
“He’ll be fine. I’m just worried about anybody who tries to get in his way.” Jon continued.
“Yeah. He sure made Alfonse take notice.” Dillon gasped a bit at his momentary lapse in judgment. He’d made a point of avoiding the subject of the man who’d managed to unravel his sanity before he’d escaped his clutches.
“Well good. And if necessary, I feel certain you can take care of that asshole if he comes back into the picture again.” Jon smiled.
“I could never.” Dillon looked at the tiled floor, ashamed at the confession. He knew that if he was faced with Alfonse, he’d simply do as he was told. His master somehow still had a psychological hold on him.
“Dillon, for Christ’s sake, look at yourself.”
He felt Jon forcefully turn him toward the mirrors.
“You are a mountain. For God’s sake man, you could break me in two with one punch. Can’t you see that? You have to be two hundred pounds of sheer muscle.”
“Two-thirty-five.”
“For the love of God! Dillon, you don’t have to have anyone to protect you. Don’t you see that?” Jon stood behind him with his hands on Dillon’s shoulders.
“I don’t work out to be big.” Dillon frowned. “I just do it to clear my head, and work off some stress.”
“Well, it most certainly has paid off. I guess its genetics, I wish I were as lucky.
