Chapter 6

Screaming jolted me awake.

“Do you hear me!”

The pain was swift and piercing. I curled into a ball. My arms protecting my head against attack.

“Get up!”

The next kick left me breathless. I felt the weight and warmth of another presence.

“Leave him alone. You’re killing him!”

I peered through a gap in my arms. “Ha... Han?”

I felt my body being shaken. “Dill?”

I sat up startled, barely missing a collision with Oliver.

“Dill, you ok?”

I sighed and rubbed my face. “Yeah, just a dream.”

He stood up, and I swung my legs off the couch to rest in a seated position. He slumped back down on the sofa.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Just another beating I took at the hands or should I say feet of Uncle Howard.”

“Damn. Can I ask you something?”

“Yeah, sure.”

“Whose Han?”

I felt the familiar tingle in my nose as I fought the forming of tears after hearing her name. “Hanna. She was my sister.”

His eyes widened, and he ran his hand through his hair. “Was?”

I nodded. “I grew up believing she was my cousin. I didn’t know she was my biological sister until a few months ago. She was in a car accident a few years ago.”

“Oh man, I’m sorry.”

“Han and Hope were best friends. We all grew up together. I lived with Han, her mom, my aunt, and her da... her stepdad. At the time we thought we were cousins. That’s a story for another time.”

“So, you’ve been sweet on Hope for a long time.”

The corners of my mouth turned up. “Yeah, we’ve been dating since the summer before seventh grade.”

“Whoa, that is a long time.”

I chuckled. “So, how are you?”

“All right, I guess. Thanks for helping me through...” He shrugged.

“Of course.”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Jesus and the whole Bible, huh?”

“I can tell you more if you want.”

“I thumbed through yours.” He motioned toward my Bible sitting on the table. “There’s so much I never knew.”

I patted him on the back. “I’ll get you a copy and Caleb and Father Caplin can help with passages for you to read.”

He tilted his head. “Whose Father Caplin?”

I winced and bit my lip.

He raised a brow. “William?”

I nodded. “Honestly, I didn’t know they were coming over. And then seeing Father Caplin dressed in street clothes and hearing Caleb call him William. I was so freaked out. I didn’t even know his first name.”

He laughed. “How do you know Father Caplin?”

“He was the one that brought Hope to God. He would visit her in the hospital—”

“Hospital?”

I sighed and ran my hand through my hair. “Hope was in the accident with Hanna.”

He drew in a sharp breath. “So, you came close to losing them both.”

“I did. For twenty-eight seconds they were both gone.”

He exhaled hard. “Wow, I... I don’t even know how you got through that. Wait, God, right?”

I shook my head. “I hadn’t accepted God into my life at that point. But it was the second time I ever prayed. And loving me despite everything, he answered my prayer.”

“Or maybe He spared Hope’s life to bring you both to Him?”

I nodded my head.
