Chapter Twenty-eight

Day five

Chloe got the call to go to the morgue early the following morning. This was it then. The end of her life with Simon. Chloe felt slightly guilty at being so elated. From this point forward the bully, the man she’d hated more than anyone, was out of her life. It was finally over. The battle was won.

She rang Brenda and told her she had to go and identify the body.

“I’ll be with you in ten minutes,” Brenda promised. “Don’t worry, I promise I won’t leave your side. You won’t be doing any of it on your own.”

Thank God for nosey neighbours, Chloe thought, when the call was ended. Over the next few days, Brenda’s help would be invaluable. More invaluable still would be what she told the others about the marriage.

Chloe put on a jacket, grabbed her bag and went outside to wait for Brenda. The morning was going to call on all her resources. Despite how she appeared when first told Chloe would have to act the distraught wife, a woman whose husband had been killed in the most dreadful way. She had to put on the performance of her life.

Brenda’s car pulled up at the gate. “Hop in,” she said. “And don’t worry, it won’t be as bad as you fear. He will look just as you remember him. Years ago, I had to identify my father. My mother wasn’t up to it. I must admit he looked quite good in death, certainly a lot better than when he was alive and drinking — which he usually was.”

Chloe gave her a wan smile. “It’s very good of you to do this, Brenda. There’s no way I could have faced it on my own.”

“How d’you feel? Be honest now, there’s no need to hold back with me. Relieved to have him out of your life? I wouldn’t blame you.”

Chloe hung her head. Brenda knew some of what had gone on between her and Simon, so there wasn’t much use denying it. “Him dying like that is a tragedy, but it does mean that I can lead my own life now. I can do what I want, go anywhere, without having to answer to Simon.” She made big eyes at Brenda. “Does that make me a bad person? Am I wrong to be thankful that he’s dead?”

Brenda shook her head. “From what I know of your relationship, no, you’re not. That man was no good for you and he deserved all he got. Given where he was found, it looks like he might have been mixing with the wrong crowd. Dean Rawlins might be missing but his gang is still active.”

Missing is that what people thought? Well, let them. For now, it suited Chloe to keep quiet.

It wasn’t far to the morgue, and soon Brenda was pulling into an empty parking spot. She grabbed hold of Chloe’s hand. “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. I’m with you.”

Hedley had been in his office since early that morning, trawling through everything they had, and he’d identified some gaps.
