Fortunately, the victim got away, but the assailant returned to the scene to search for the girls. However, there was no trace of them. He was beginning to question if he had even seen them or if the cocktail of drugs he was on was causing him to hallucinate.

While rushing out of the building, he found Camila’s cell phone on the hallway floor near the bathroom. The phone was locked, but her screen saver was a picture of her and Gaby.

“Gotcha!” he said, putting the phone in his pocket, glad this verified what he saw.

Camila’s phone vibrated in the perpetrator’s pocket. He took it out and saw a picture of Gabriela.

“Hello, sunshine!” he said, and a stunned Gaby did not answer. She could only breathe heavily.

“Why don’t you tell me where you and your friend are hiding, so I can return her phone,” he said sweetly.

Gaby ended the call with no reply. She was as white as a ghost as she slowly turned to look at Camila.

“He has your phone,” she said softly, sinking into the sofa and covering her face with her palms.

“Who does?” Camila asked, peeling Gaby’s hands off her face, desperately hoping it was not who she was thinking.

“The dude with the knife,” Gaby said, confirming Camila’s suspicion, and Camila looked at her with dread.

Camila held the stare but didn’t verbalize what she felt, and I wondered if they were telepathically communicating or simply talking with their eyes.

No one said anything for a long time. “Okay, let’s think. Why don’t we do that ‘find my phone’ thing, and get a location to inform the police where this son of a bitch is!” I suggested.

“I’ll get my laptop,” Carmen said, sprinting to the bedroom.

Camila and Gaby remained silent. I texted Thiago and told him what had happened. I instructed him not to call or text Camila’s phone.

I hope Mama Bear doesn’t call her. That would make things worse.

Thiago was frantic since he was out of state, but I assured him that Camila was well and that we had already alerted the police, but he demanded to speak to Camila.

That boy is intense. He’s crazy about his girl. I don’t know how that breakup will sit with him, but that’s for another time.

“I think he’ll dump the phone,” Gaby whispered after a while, and we looked at her expecting her to go on.

“He’s a criminal. He knows the police will track him with it,” she said in a normal voice, and we all nodded.

It made sense, but now he knows who they are. So, he’ll surely come after them if he’s not apprehended.

Camila kicked off her sneakers. She was sweating, and I immediately got up to turn on the air conditioner.

The pink tank top she wore stuck to her skin, and she held her curly hair up in a ponytail.

Remember when Camila said helping was their mission? Well, I wonder how she likes them apples now? So, who’s going to help save these heroes?

Agent Jackson received an alert from the law enforcement database.
