Jane’s heart raced. The snake of a woman had to be stopped. Jane could not let Natalia sink fangs into Gabe. The next potion had to be the one.

As soon as she landed at Dial Witch, she got back to work on potion number three. As she set the fire on low, added water to her cauldron, and then mashed herbs, she and Vix swapped stories about their dinner conversations. She put dried leaves into the cauldron, added water and set the fire on low.

“Don’t use Grandma Harry’s spell this time,” said Vix.

“Trust me. I’m not doing that again, or at least not in the same way. I fear my sisters wrath, and if that didn’t kill me the mage’s tweets would.”

“Or their familiars.”

Jane nodded.

“What will you use instead?”

“I’ll hit the Snake and the King with something they won’t expect. Something they won’t be prepared to fight against.”

“I like the sound of that.”

Jane threw Gabe’s napkin into the steaming brew.

“You’re adding linen?”

“With traces of innocence.”

“Hmm. I don’t get it.”

“Some of Gabe’s essence is on that napkin. It will add strength and purity to the potion.”

“I can understand the strength part. But innocence and purity? We’re talking about a male teenage warlock. Do you know the things they get up to?”

“Yup. I dated them. Remember?”

“So, Gabe is Natalia’s perfect prey?”

“Yup.” Jane bit her lower lip as she stirred the liquid. “He talks a good tale, and no doubt has fun with his friends, but his heart is pure.”

The air shimmered and gray mist filled the air. Donovan appeared.

Just what she needed—a warlock brother-in-law looking over her shoulder as she brewed the most important potion of her life.

He sniffed the air and made a face. “What’s in the pot?”

“Something to keep your son safe.”

“So, Natalia Night is true evil.”

“She steals souls.”

He flinched. “I heard she was quickly working through the men in town, but that’s all I heard. None of them complained.”

“Those guys are never the same afterwards though, are they?”

Donovan shrugged. “I’ve heard rumors. Thought they were locker room jokes. But yeah, the men do seem changed.”

“Remember when I told you that I was helping Grig?”

The warlock nodded. “You said you were breaking a curse placed on the gargoyle.”

“Natalia seduced him just like the others. But when she got him alone, he made a bargain with her, so she would spare his soul.”

“Breaking Grig’s curse won’t be enough.”

“I know. I have to take down Natalia and her partner Elvis, so there won’t be any more victims like Grig and Gabe and so many men.”

“How can I help?”

Jane swallowed. “Natalia has three hunting grounds: The Rusty Anchor Bar, the waterfront walkway, and The Perfect Brew.”

“I’ll send spies to watch all three.”

“That would help. We have to protect everyone.”

But the warlock sheriff didn’t leave. He watched the smoke rising from the potion brewing in Jane’s cauldron. “I can’t lose Gabe. He’s …” Donovan hesitated. “My son.”

“Can you keep him away from Natalia?”

Donovan winced. “I’ll try.”
