Many may not be aware that the hobby of amateur radio can bring out the competitive spirit in its followers. And that it often does. Many hams are active in radiosport, vigorous and hard-fought contesting in which participants attempt to contact as many other operators as possible or talk with stations located at as many different spots on the globe as they can manage, all within a set period of time, on only designated bands, or using only specific modes of transmission.

But sometimes, the competition can be on the fly, or even self-imposed.

As we shall see, it can sometimes prove a point and perhaps even help a curmudgeon realize that he does not necessarily know all he thinks he does.

Just another way ham radio can offer a powerful and effective learning experience.
